Denny Hamlin Sweeps Darlington, Wins Southern 500 At Darlington Raceway

A bad miss of the pit road entrance couldn’t stop Denny Hamlin from rallying past Martin Truex Jr. with only 3 laps left to win the Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway on Sunday night.

Hamlin fell behind Truex by 20 seconds after sliding by the entrance with 54 laps left but slowly came back completing the weekend sweep.

Hamlin won the Xfinity Series race on Saturday.

Truex won the 1st 2 stages of NASCAR’s regular-season championship and gained the No. 1 seed heading into the playoffs, which take place in just two weeks.

When Hamlin missed the entrance it seemed as though the race was Truex’s to win. But Hamlin stayed patient and eventually closed the gap and overtook Truex.

Truex rubbed the wall and eventually blew his right front tire.

“This is a good day all in all. So proud to be back in victory lane in the Southern 500,” Hamlin said (h/t ESPN).

“Sometimes it’s just not your night,” Truex said. “Tonight wasn’t our night.”
