Ryan Blaney Makes History: Blaney, the 29-year-old third-generation driver, clinched his first NASCAR elite division championship on Sunday, making his debut in the Championship 4.
In his pursuit of the title, Blaney outshone two of the season’s top drivers – William Byron from Hendrick Motorsports, who led with six wins, and Kyle Larson, who boasted four wins and led in laps.
This victory marks the fourth overall and second consecutive Cup title for Penske, adding to the organization’s storied history.
Blaney’s path to the championship mirrors Joey Logano’s 2022 run – both secured one early-season victory and clinched two crucial wins in the 10-race playoffs to seize the title.
What makes Blaney’s victory even more remarkable is that he becomes the first driver to win the championship under the current playoff format without winning the season finale. He secured second place in Sunday’s race, with Ross Chastain taking the checkered flag. Even while poised to secure the title in the second spot, Blaney continuously challenged Chastain for the win, resulting in several close encounters on the track.
Ending the year with three wins and a championship, Blaney has joined the elite group of motorsports champions for Penske.
Penske himself expressed immense confidence in Blaney’s potential, likening him to the legendary four-time Indianapolis 500 winner, Rick Mears. He emphasized Blaney’s transformation when he’s behind the wheel, highlighting his leadership, winning spirit, and champion’s mentality.
Blaney’s journey to the championship was far from easy. He started the race in the tenth position after the first stage and sixth in Stage 2. However, he gradually worked his way up to the second spot with 100 laps remaining in the 312-lap race.
During a late-race caution that sent all lead-lap cars to pit road, Blaney found himself behind the two remaining title contenders, Larson and Byron, and sixth overall when the race resumed with 31 laps to go. But Blaney wasted no time in passing both Byron and Larson, ultimately seizing the championship lead.
Penske noted the true test of mettle Blaney faced in the last 20 to 30 laps, where he had to pass several competitors to secure the championship. Blaney’s achievements at Talladega, his performance against Denny Hamlin in Florida, and his flawless 500 laps at Martinsville all contributed to the breakthrough victory.
This win marks a significant milestone in Blaney’s career, and as Penske stated, he has a bright future ahead and is just getting started on a remarkable journey in NASCAR.
