Chase Elliott on Winless Season: Striving for Improvement in 2024

Chase Elliott on Winless Season: Chase Elliott didn’t quite embrace the season’s conclusion, despite the general belief that his Hendrick Motorsports team might benefit from the winter break for a reset.

“In my view, the best classroom is the racetrack week after week,” Elliott expressed. “No environment replicates the race weekends’ intensity and essence. Learning happens best in that racing environment.”

Elliott remained confident his team was progressing in the right direction, despite lackluster results. In the Phoenix season finale, he secured a 16th-place finish after a 20th-place start, marking his fourth consecutive outing finishing 15th or below.

While Elliott’s car secured a spot in the owners’ championship and secured 10th in the standings, on the driver’s side, he remained winless and missed the postseason, tallying 15 top-10 finishes, his fewest in a single season since 2019.

Reflecting on the season, Elliott admitted, “It’s been a mixed bag. There were moments of promise, but overall, it hasn’t met my standards or our team’s. There’s plenty of room for improvement, and that’s our focus for the upcoming year.”

Elliott refrained from pinpointing specific areas needing improvement, noting, “Everything needs to elevate.”

Despite missing seven races due to various reasons, Elliott was uncertain if it significantly impacted his season’s trajectory, aside from potentially impacting his playoff chances.

“The missed races might not have drastically changed our outcome,” Elliott mentioned. “The struggle wasn’t solely about missing those races; it’s about understanding our weaknesses.”

Acknowledging the challenges faced, Elliott stressed the team’s intent to learn and grow. “We’ve gathered insights into our shortcomings and where I need to enhance my performance,” he affirmed.

While Elliott remains unsatisfied with the season’s outcome, he maintains faith in his team’s dedication and resilience. “It’s about persevering, pushing harder, and refusing to settle,” Elliott concluded. “We’ll keep striving, working diligently, and I trust our relentless effort will lead us to where we aim to be.”

For Elliott, who clinched 18 victories between 2018 and 2022, this winless stretch didn’t come as a shock. “It’s a tough sport. If you’re not at your best, winning becomes elusive. We haven’t been at our peak,” Elliott admitted.
