Kyle Busch Reflects on Debut Season at RCR: Assessing Progress and Future Goals

Kyle Busch Reflects on Debut Season: Kyle Busch’s inaugural season with Richard Childress Racing (RCR) didn’t culminate in a Championship 4 return, but he assesses the year with a measured perspective, despite early accomplishments.

“Probably a B-minus,” Busch noted during the NASCAR Awards at the Music City Center. “Started strong, probably a middle-A for the first races, but the latter half places us around a C. Overall, a B-minus.”

His initiation into RCR showcased promise. Triumph at Fontana marked his fifth Cup win at the track, heralding his debut victory with the team. Subsequent success at Talladega, capitalizing on late-race chaos, and a commanding Gateway win in June underscored his competitive start.

However, the season’s landscape altered at Loudon in July with a 37th-place finish, followed by nine sub-20th finishes in the final 17 races.

“We could have contended, had we sustained our early momentum,” Busch reflected. “Our stats weren’t far off from the champion’s, but our DNFs hurt.”

Busch attributes struggles to rivals adapting to RCR’s pace and acknowledges personal errors, occasionally pushing the limits unnecessarily.

“Understanding this car’s dynamics is key,” Busch acknowledged. “It trends loose, so finding that balance without overreaching is vital.”

Correcting these issues tops Busch and RCR’s off-season agenda, aiming for consistent speed and refined setups.

Work, both in the shop and fostering team cohesion nationwide, remains pivotal for RCR. Participating in the World Racing League event at Circuit of the Americas, a reminiscent experience from 2022 with Austin Dillon, exemplifies their approach.

“(The race) bonds us,” Busch affirmed. “Similarly, a hunting trip with Richard (Childress) in January aims for team camaraderie.”

Unified by the aspiration to revive RCR’s championship aspirations, Busch eyes further milestones, aiming to elevate his Hall of Fame career by securing elusive victories and another championship for RCR.

“I believe there’s more I can contribute,” Busch affirmed. Reviving RCR and that Daytona 500 win are on my radar.
