Denny Hamlin Future Concerns: NASCAR Season Post-Shoulder Surgery

Denny Hamlin Future Concerns: Denny Hamlin, a veteran with 51 victories in the NASCAR Cup Series, recently revealed that the shoulder surgery he underwent last week was more extensive than initially expected. This might potentially impact his participation in the Feb. 4 Busch Light Clash at The Coliseum, just two weeks prior to the Daytona 500.

Expressing his current status, the 43-year-old Hamlin shared, “Right now, it’s a slow recovery process involving minimal physical exertion and daily physical therapy. I’m significantly further away from where I thought I would be. The initial estimation was a three- to four-week recovery, but upon surgery, it turned out there was extensive damage that needed immediate attention. So, it’s safe to say this will alter my offseason plans significantly.”

Hamlin originally planned to dedicate his offseason to improving performances on certain tracks where he previously had average showings. However, with limitations on accessing a simulator due to his recovery, those plans have been shelved.

“This changes my approach, and realistically, my first track time might be in February,” Hamlin remarked. Discussing the possibility of analyzing The Clash, he added, “There might be a consideration for evaluating The Clash, but as of now, the timeline doesn’t align with what’s needed. They don’t advise loading the shoulder for three months, which doesn’t align with my preparations.”

Reflecting on his recent struggles, Hamlin noted, “I don’t anticipate more pain in late January than what I experienced towards the end of last season. Enduring the final races was incredibly challenging. If I managed that, I’m confident I can challenge myself to return to driving sooner than recommended.”

Hamlin’s recent surgery was intended to address a bone spur, similar to one he had fixed in his left shoulder three years ago. However, complications arose when he tore two tendons in the shoulder leading up to the October Las Vegas race. These injuries occurred during a non-racing event, and subsequent incidents on the track exacerbated the condition.

“Continuing to race with these issues was not ideal,” Hamlin stated. “After tearing the tendons, I was essentially racing while dealing with a compromised rotator cuff. The pain was severe, particularly in the last few races, hindering my performance. There were moments where I struggled to reach certain controls in the car. Given my background as a right-hand dominant driver, I had to adapt to using my left hand during the playoffs. It was a significant adjustment that required immediate attention.”

Hamlin admitted to the physical limitations he faced, recalling, “In the lead-up to the Las Vegas race, I was unable to lift my right arm at all.”

He clarified that his shoulder issues were not a result of racing incidents but rather a genetic predisposition where “the bone grows slightly longer than usual.”

“Waking up from the surgery and realizing I’ll have a three-month period with a non-functional arm is understandably disheartening,” Hamlin expressed, acknowledging the challenges ahead.
