Kyle Larson Double-Duty: IndyCar Debut and NASCAR Challenge Await

Kyle Larson Double-Duty: IndyCar’s marquee event is set to feature NASCAR Cup champion Kyle Larson for the first time next year. Larson has signed up for America’s premier open-wheel race, aligning with a Hendrick-backed, McLaren-run car.

Roger Penske, whose team secured its 19th victory in the iconic race with Josef Newgarden this year, enthusiastically welcomed the participation of Larson, the 2021 Cup champion. Larson will swiftly jet off to Charlotte after the 500 to compete in NASCAR’s Coca-Cola 600 that same evening.

“We’re thrilled to have Larson join the speedway,” Penske expressed. “Rick [Hendrick] and I discussed Larson running here after a couple of years without much success… then McLaren got involved, and we’ve cheered on that decision. His talent and Midwest fanbase are remarkable.”

Penske acknowledged Larson’s talent, citing his swift rookie test at Indianapolis in October, previously attempted by driver Kurt Busch. “He brings immense skill and genuine interest in being here.”

Blaney, another Cup champion, hinted at his own interest in Indy racing: “It’s crossed my mind for a while now. Larson’s doing it next year, and that’s fantastic. I’ve floated the idea with RP for some years, so maybe I’ll bring it up again.”

Blaney’s racing roots trace back to open-wheel quarter midget racing on ovals, following in the footsteps of his father, renowned in sprint car and World of Outlaws circuits.

“The double is a unique challenge mastered by few,” Blaney shared. “There’s a certain allure and nostalgia to it. It’s a significant feat to say you’ve raced 1100 miles in one day. At my stage, it feels like the perfect time to explore it.”

Acknowledging Larson’s upcoming venture, Blaney hinted at his own aspirations: “It’s terrific for Kyle, and perhaps one day, I’ll have the privilege too.”
