Legends of Motorsport Reunion: A Celebration of Australian Racing History on Gold Coast

Gold Coast, Australia: The Legends of Motorsport Reunion returned to its new Gold Coast venue, Parkwood International Golf Club, despite COVID-19-related delays. The eighth annual Legends Reunion, organized by motorsport veteran Ian Maudsley and his wife Val, brought together some of the sport’s biggest stars for stories, laughs, and a celebration of its rich history.

The Legends Reunion guest list included Australian motorsport legends Dick Johnson, John Goss, Allan Grice, Charlie O’Brien, Graham Moore, Kerry Bailey, John Smith, Kevin Bartlett, and Fred Gibson, 1967 Bathurst winner turned team owner. Engineers, mechanics, team owners, administrators, promoters, two-wheeled icons, and veteran media attended.

A fascinating one-on-one interview with Fred Gibson, now 82, about his racing career, including his unexpected entry into the 1967 great race and his 1990s dominance of the Nissan factory touring car team, was the highlight of the Legends Reunion.

The Legends of Motorsport Reunion returned this year at a new venue following two years of COVID-19 limitations.
This year, the Legends Reunion was hosted at the Gold Coast’s Parkwood International Golf Club, a picturesque setting.

The Legends Reunion, founded eight years ago to honor late motor racing star Leo Geoghegan, has become one of the nation’s largest motorsport events. Former opponents, teammates, and fans may celebrate Australian racing’s history and brotherhood there.

Ian and Val, Maudsley of Hope Island, spent months planning the Legends Reunion. Gwen Cooke, Stirling Ashby, Greg Ross, and Michael Stillwell funded this year’s event.

Maudsley remarked that was our best reunion. Many individuals tried to be here, and the stories and ‘falsehoods’ always make it worthwhile.

This year’s Legends Reunion, loaded with memories and ‘tales,’ reminds us of Australian motorsport’s love, heritage, and community. The Parkwood International Golf Club’s magnificent surroundings set the stage for a day that will be remembered by those who influence and cherish Australian racing.
