Short-Track Testing: In a recent two-day NASCAR Cup Series short-track test at Phoenix Raceway, Ryan Blaney, the reigning Cup Series Champion and Team Penske driver, shared insights on the adjustments made to the NASCAR Next Gen car for short-track racing.
Reflecting on the test drive experience, Blaney highlighted significant alterations in the car’s aerodynamics compared to a month ago. Notably, he emphasized the impact of changes on the car’s downforce, stating, “Yeah, big difference. We unloaded exactly how we were here in fall. You know, with this car, (we) ran a couple hours on it. And the different splitter? Big difference.”
Addressing the profound effect of these modifications on driving, Blaney emphasized, “Massive with the way it drives. I mean, so much downforce taken off of it. It was big. First laps I had I was like ‘man this thing drives way different’.”
Joining Blaney in the test were notable drivers like Kyle Larson, Christopher Bell, Chris Buescher, Erik Jones, and Corey LaJoie.
Detailing the adjustments made, particularly focusing on the front splitter, Blaney noted, “The simple diffuser wasn’t as big of a change as the splitter. But it was still something to feel.” He further remarked on the evident aerodynamic impact, stating, “I think that was the first run after the lunch. It drove hugely, which it should. I mean there’s some massive aero loss when you do that.”
Blaney expressed optimism about further modifications, stating, “But yeah that front splitter was a huge change. Hopefully we can continue tweaking on it a little bit, I think we’ll get a little better.”
In contrast, Legacy driver Erik Jones highlighted the significance of changes around the tire, stating, “The tire stuff was really good. I’ll be learning a lot with that beginning of the day. Probably it’s going to apply to a lot of places and we’ll see how durability does with the tire that we tried today that everybody kind of liked tomorrow.”
The drivers’ observations shed light on the ongoing adjustments made to the NASCAR Next Gen car, illustrating their varied experiences and areas of focus during the short-track testing session.
