Revamping Sonoma Raceway: Sonoma Raceway, renowned for hosting NASCAR events on its challenging road course, is set to undergo a significant facelift with a full repaving project ahead of the June 2024 Cup Series race.
The contract for this ambitious endeavor has been entrusted to Bay Cities Paving & Grading, based in Concord, California. The comprehensive project extends beyond the road course layouts integral to NASCAR events, encompassing the infield drag strip. This marks the second significant repaving undertaking in preparation for the 2024 season, following the North Wilkesboro Speedway.
Beyond its stature in the Cup Series, Sonoma Raceway has been a hub for various prestigious racing competitions, including the IndyCar Series, NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series, GT World Challenge, and Ferrari events.
NASCAR icon Richard Petty shared his reflections on the upcoming Raceway improvements via the track’s official Instagram handle. Expressing his past wish for a paved track during his racing era, he anticipated enhanced racing dynamics due to the improved surface. Petty highlighted that while the track’s character remains unchanged, the paving could potentially make racing more engaging.
Brian Flynn, the executive vice president and general manager of the Raceway, expressed eagerness regarding the enhancements. He emphasized the importance of continuously upgrading the facility, given its extensive use not only during the Toyota/Save Mart 350 NASCAR weekend but also by various automotive enthusiasts, corporate clients, and manufacturers throughout the year.
Flynn further highlighted the significance of partnering with a local company for the repaving project, emphasizing the commitment to community collaboration while aiming to host top-tier events attracting guests from across the country and around the globe.
Steve Swift, senior vice president of operations and development at Speedway Motorsports, emphasized the selection of materials crucial for the repaving. He underlined the objective to provide drivers with a track offering a seasoned feel, ensuring competitive and thrilling racing right from the outset in 2024.
This development comes after Martin Truex Jr.’s victory in this year’s Toyota/Save Mart 350 race at Sonoma Raceway, adding anticipation for future races at the revamped track in 2024.
