The 2025 NASCAR Cup Series rookie class is beginning to take shape after the opening nine races of the season. With a mix of veterans moving up and international talent entering full-time competition, the freshmen battle is showing clear signs of separation. The group includes Riley Herbst, Shane van Gisbergen, and Zane Smith. Each driver has faced unique challenges early in the season, with results offering an early look at the rookie standings.
Leading the rookie points battle is Zane Smith, who has tallied 161 points and sits 24th in the overall standings. Smith has secured one top-10 finish this season and claimed a pole position at Talladega, highlighting his speed. Across the first nine events, Smith has led three laps and maintains an average finish of 19.3. He has shown the most consistent pace among the rookies to this point.
Riley Herbst has scored 101 points and holds 33rd place in the standings. Herbst has not yet recorded a top-10 finish but has finished 17th on three occasions, marking his best results to date. He has one DNF this season and an average finish of 25.9. Herbst continues to search for breakthrough performances in his rookie year.
Shane van Gisbergen, the three-time Australian Supercars champion, is adjusting to NASCAR competition. He currently has 98 points and is ranked 34th overall. Van Gisbergen earned a sixth-place finish at Circuit of The Americas, his only top-10 result so far. However, three DNFs and an average finish of 27.9 reflect the difficulties of a full Cup schedule. He has led 25 laps, the highest among rookies, but has struggled with consistency.
Through the first nine races, no rookie has captured a win. Zane Smith have established himself as the early leaders in the Rookie of the Year battle. Smith’s steady performances and pole award have placed him in a strong position.
The 2025 rookie class has shown promise and areas for improvement. As the NASCAR Cup Series moves deeper into the season, consistency will be key for all three drivers. The battle for top rookie honors remains open, with Smith leading the charge and, Herbst, and van Gisbergen aiming to gain ground.
