During a recent episode of “The Herm & Schrader” podcast, Kenny Wallace openly blasted NASCAR drivers’ current fuel-saving strategy, calling it “stupid” and placing direct blame on recent pit stop rule changes. Speaking alongside co-host and former NASCAR Cup Series driver Ken Schrader, Wallace explained that his criticism comes after thorough research into why drivers have adopted this controversial approach, highlighting its roots in changes to pit stop routines and car component designs.

Kenny Wallace elaborated that many drivers now prioritize saving fuel during races in order to minimize the time spent refueling during pit stops. According to Wallace, since the introduction of the new lug nut design, it is now faster to change tires than to refuel, making fuel-saving tactics more popular. “It just doesn’t make sense to me,” Wallace said, emphasizing that while tire changes have become quicker, the refueling process, which uses a special vented dump can system, still requires extra time and a dedicated pit crew member.

Ken Schrader agreed with Kenny Wallace’s assessment, reinforcing the idea that the pit stop rule changes reshaped race strategies across the field. Both former drivers discussed how these pit procedures, originally intended to optimize race pace, have backfired by making fuel management a dominant factor over aggressive racing. Tire conservation and fuel consumption have always been essential in stock car racing, but Wallace argued that the current strategy robs races of excitement and competition.

On an earlier podcast episode, Kenny Wallace and Ken Schrader also commented on NASCAR’s surprising decision to return racing to two renowned tracks, Bowman Gray Stadium and Rockingham Speedway. After a 54-year hiatus, the governing body held a non-point-paying race at Bowman Gray Stadium on February 2, 2025, with Chase Elliott emerging victorious. Rockingham Speedway also hosted two races in April 2025, where Tyler Ankrum claimed the Truck Series win, and Sammy Smith won the Xfinity Series event.
