Larson, sharing his viewpoint from the racetrack, acknowledged that he is open to experimenting with new solutions.
“I don’t know, I think we would be all for trying something new,”
he explained. While uncertain whether the change would dramatically overhaul the racing dynamics, he remained optimistic that it could be a positive step.
“I think it’s gotten a little bit stale — the racing product — so, I think we’re in need of a change to try to help but I don’t know. I think it would be good to start there.”
His sentiments reflect a growing concern among drivers and fans that NASCAR’s action on the track has become predictable and lacks the edge that once defined the series.
Historically, NASCAR engines were capable of producing over 900 horsepower; however, since 2015, the governing body has systematically lowered engine output. Today, except on high-banked drafting tracks, engines are limited to 670 horsepower, a move NASCAR argues is essential for attracting new manufacturers and minimizing costs. Despite persistent requests from drivers such as Kyle Larson to restore some lost power, officials have been hesitant to entertain substantial increases, citing financial and competitive stability concerns.
NASCAR’s resistance has come under scrutiny, especially as drivers express growing dissatisfaction with the current setup. Mike Forde, NASCAR’s managing director of racing communications, recently addressed these concerns, stating that rumors of jumping to 900 or 1000 horsepower are not being considered due to expense. However, a modest hike—potentially up to 750 horsepower—is on the table.
“I don’t want to make any promises or get anyone’s hopes up, but that is, we seriously listen to the drivers and their feedback, and we’ll see what we can do there,”
Forde said on Hauler Talk, underscoring the sport’s dilemma between tradition, innovation, and cost.
