Danica Patrick joins Indy 500 broadcast team, sparking backlash from racing fans ahead of big event

Danica Patrick, former professional racing driver and trailblazer in both IndyCar and NASCAR, is set to make a high-profile return to the Indianapolis 500 as part of the broadcast team for Fox Sports. The network revealed that Patrick will join its coverage for the much-anticipated race on Sunday, May 25, reuniting her with the iconic event where she made history as the only woman to win an IndyCar race. Her role will focus on pre-race coverage, bringing her firsthand experience and perspective to racing fans across the country.

Throughout her storied career, Danica Patrick not only competed in several Indy 500 races but also achieved significant milestones, including leading 19 laps in 2005 and securing third place in 2009, the highest finish ever by a woman in the event’s history. Since retiring from driving, Patrick has remained closely associated with motorsports, frequently taking on broadcasting roles that showcase her insight and expertise.

Fox Sports announced that Patrick will be part of a broadcast lineup featuring Tony Stewart, 1997 INDYCAR SERIES champion, and longtime network anchor Chris Myers. Tom Rinaldi and Erin Andrews are also set to participate, further strengthening the network’s coverage for the 108th Running of the Indianapolis 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Despite Danica Patrick’s impressive credentials and pioneering impact in racing, her appointment to the broadcast team has ignited mixed reactions from Indy 500 fans. Social media posts reveal a wave of discontent, with one fan expressing, “Noooooooooooo Danica,” and another asking,

“Why Danica Patrick? Get a driver that is actually relevant to the Indy 500.”

A further comment read,

“Can we please stop adding Danica Patrick to the broadcasts. She does not add anything,”

while yet another added,

“Love Tony; glad I’ll be in the stands and won’t have to listen to Danica. Even though she will have insight on all wrecks from first hand experience.”

Disapproval also stemmed from preferences for the regular host lineup, as one fan insisted,

“The current lineup is perfect. The additional guests will not contribute anything useful to the broadcast.”

Fox Sports, however, remains steadfast, defending its decision and confirming that Danica Patrick will continue as a major presence in future Indy 500 broadcasts, including coverage for 2025. This move underscores the network’s commitment to incorporating diverse viewpoints and championing voices like Patrick’s, who have played a transformative role in the history of motorsport. As the Indianapolis 500 approaches, debate continues over the inclusion of Patrick on the broadcast team, highlighting the emotionally charged atmosphere surrounding her involvement and setting the stage for a memorable, and possibly contentious, race day experience for both viewers and those in attendance.
