Dale Earnhardt Jr. urges NASCAR to end stage cautions, calls for major shakeup in race rules

Dale Earnhardt Jr. urges NASCAR to end stage cautions, proposing the sport eliminate scheduled caution periods and change how points are awarded, according to his recent discussion on his Dale Jr. Download podcast. He believes such a shift could lead to more dynamic racing, though challenges involving television networks remain a major obstacle.

Earnhardt’s Call for Ending Stage Cautions

Dale Earnhardt Jr. expressed a strong preference for NASCAR to drop planned stage breaks, stating that he would like to see stage cautions disappear entirely. He supports continuing to pay points at set intervals during races, as is currently done, but without the requirement for a caution to interrupt the racing action. Earnhardt Jr. referenced insights from Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch, highlighting the potential effects of race scenarios where drivers can score more points without necessarily finishing at the front, which he acknowledged is a topic for future debate.

It does create a conversation that I think we need to have around somebody who finished 14th getting fifth-place points or the fifth-best points, or the guy even winning the race not having the most points as the guy in second or third because of what happened throughout the race. I don’t know if I love all that, but hey, that’s another conversation.

Alternative Approaches to Race Cautions and Strategy

Earnhardt Jr. proposed the use of a lap clock or timer so that, if a certain number of laps are run under green without an incident, a caution flag could be thrown. Any natural caution would reset the timer, changing the flow of the race. He suggested this would affect fuel strategies and decision-making for teams, making the outcome less predictable and forcing more on-track racing, rather than planned pauses.

Obstacles Presented by Television Networks

Despite favoring the removal of stage cautions, Earnhardt Jr. recognized that the influence of television partners represents a significant barrier to enacting these changes. He noted that broadcast networks prefer predictable caution periods, as these facilitate scheduled commercial breaks and more streamlined TV planning. Earnhardt Jr. described the networks’ considerable leverage over race procedures, scheduling, and presentation, suggesting that any push for major rule changes would require navigating these interests.

As Earnhardt Jr. pointed out, the needs of both fans and networks can clash, complicating efforts to make races less predictable and more strategic for teams and drivers alike.

Current Use of Stage Cautions and Implications for Future Races

The practice of stage cautions has been in place in NASCAR’s Cup Series since 2017, with a brief removal from road course events in 2023 before being reinstated. For upcoming events such as the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, stage cautions will continue, with three scheduled breaks in the four-stage race; these cautions are planned every 100 laps.

As debate continues around these policies, the perspectives of influential figures like Dale Earnhardt Jr., along with input from other drivers such as Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch, are likely to keep the topic at the forefront leading into major races, including those in both the regular season and key events like the Coca-Cola 600. The ongoing discussion highlights the potential for significant changes in race management, but also the complex dynamics and competing priorities between drivers, teams, networks, and fans as NASCAR charts its path forward.
