Dale Earnhardt Jr. on NASCAR’s evolution and nostalgia took center stage during his recent appearance on the “Rubbin’ Is Racing” podcast, where he openly discussed how the sport is changing and why he believes these changes are worth embracing. Earnhardt Jr. Challenges Nostalgic Views on NASCAR’s Past
During the discussion, the podcast co-host questioned if NASCAR could ever regain its former “cool” status. Earnhardt Jr. responded by sharing his perspective that the sport moves through cycles and is currently on an upward trend. He stated that he sees NASCAR heading in the right direction, despite frequent criticism.

he said.

He made it clear that his criticism comes from a genuine love for NASCAR, and he often reminds fans that nostalgia can cloud judgment. Reflecting on his own experiences, he suggested that many who reminisce about previous decades, including the 80s, 90s, and even the 70s, tend to gloss over the less favorable aspects of those “good old days.”

“We’re fortunate enough to have lived the 90s and lived the 80s and lived some of the 70s. And we are always going to go, man, those were the good old days,”
Earnhardt Jr. said.
However, he also questioned the accuracy of these memories, noting in a lighthearted manner that sometimes those past moments were not as great as they seem in hindsight. He joked about how childhood memories often seem better than they actually were once looked at more closely.
Earnhardt Jr. called attention to how selective memory can influence perception.
“We don’t remember all of the bad moments and things and shitty things about it because we forget that stuff,”
he said.
Acknowledging NASCAR’s Positive Momentum
Rather than focusing on constantly comparing the present to past eras, Earnhardt Jr. encouraged fans to appreciate the advancements and improvements NASCAR has made. He stressed that the sport is in a strong position today but acknowledged there is always room for growth and positive change.
“Where we are today with our sport is a really, really good place,”
he said.
“There’s some things that can improve, and they probably will,”
Earnhardt Jr. added.
He highlighted that NASCAR has greatly expanded its reach in recent years, pointing to new partnerships with media companies and the addition of international events on the calendar. These steps, according to Earnhardt Jr., mark a significant evolution compared to only five or ten years ago.
“We’re in places where we weren’t, you know, five, ten years ago,”
he said.
There’s a lot of things… that are really good,” he said. “It’s all in the lens you look at it through.
