Kyle Larson Backs Podium Celebrations in NASCAR, Calls for F1-Style Recognition of Top Finishers

Kyle Larson supports podium celebrations in NASCAR like F1, suggesting a fresh approach to recognizing top drivers after each race. Speaking ahead of the Cup Series event in Mexico, Larson shared his views on enhancing race weekends with more visible celebrations for leading finishers.

Larson’s Perspective on Adopting Podium Traditions

Kyle Larson, who routinely competes across different motorsports, spoke with members of the press just before competing in the historic Cup Series race in Mexico, NASCAR’s first international event since 1958. During his media session, The Athletic’s Jordan Bianchi asked if any elements from the Mexican event could benefit future NASCAR weekends.

The diversity of motorsport traditions is familiar territory for Larson, as he races in various series every week. Addressing the concept of post-race podiums, Larson remarked:

“I think maybe things will come up tomorrow and seeing how driver intros go or the post-race podium and stuff,”

“I think that could be a piece, an easy piece to incorporate to other weekends.”

Highlighting Top Three Drivers on Race Day

When prompted by NBC’s Dustin Long to offer specific ideas, Larson explained how celebrating the top three could begin with NASCAR’s most significant events, also known as “crown jewel” races. Drawing from his background in dirt racing, where the leading trio always gathers on the front stretch post-race, Larson noted the value these intimate celebrations bring to both competitors and fans.

These interviews and moments are not drastically different from NASCAR’s current pit road interviews, yet Larson sees opportunities for deeper connection with the audience, especially through podium photos and group recognition.

Forming a Unique NASCAR Experience

Larson also referred to traditions in Formula One, where winner ceremonies incorporate elements such as national anthems, adding a level of pride and festivity to the celebration.

He highlighted the importance of celebrating not just the victor, but also those finishing second and third, which, in a challenging series like Cup, is a significant achievement for teams and partners. He reflected on the emotional effort required after hard-fought races but felt the gesture resonated with the fanbase.

“So, again, I think there’s ways that NASCAR can look at making it have their own kind of touch and feel. But, yeah, I think we’ll see how it goes tomorrow and like I thought the LA Clash thing was awesome to see, too. So, we’ve done it before. I think we could do it at other places.”

Potential Impact on NASCAR’s Future

As NASCAR continues to explore new formats and international venues, Kyle Larson’s suggestion to formally recognize podium finishers may shape the sport’s approach to post-race ceremonies. The move would not only honor driver achievement but also create more memorable experiences for fans and teams at the track, possibly starting with marquee events before expanding further. Celebrations like those in F1 could give the series a fresh identity while keeping the spirit of American racing distinctly its own.
