Denny Hamlin Falls Short of 8th Pocono Victory as Fuel Strategy Steals the Spotlight

Denny Hamlin came very close to an eighth career win at Pocono Raceway on Sunday, but a critical fuel strategy decision defined the outcome as teammate Chase Briscoe captured his maiden victory for Joe Gibbs Racing.

Late Fuel Strategy Reverses Hamlin’s Lead

The action at Pocono Raceway saw Hamlin commanding the early part of the race, leading the field from pole position and securing a Stage 1 win after 32 laps. The initial stages favored speed and track presence, but the pace shifted as the event progressed and strategy began to outweigh raw performance.

Chase Briscoe, racing in his first full season for Joe Gibbs Racing, managed the pivotal shift well. During the final restart with 34 laps remaining, Briscoe moved ahead of Hamlin and the rest of the field. While Hamlin was chasing from behind, Briscoe’s focus was firmly on managing fuel and preserving his lead instead of outright speed.

Pit Stop Timing Alters Race Outcome

Everything changed following a crucial round of pit stops, when a caution flag dropped immediately after Briscoe and several others made their move to the pits. This sequence shuffled the running order, costing Hamlin invaluable track position and making overtaking significantly more challenging. Hamlin later reflected,

“When five cars pitted and then the caution came and the [No.] 19 and a bunch of guys jumped in front of us, I knew it would be really hard to give that track position back,”

Pushed back in the queue, Hamlin fought to regain ground, but the aerodynamic challenges of racing in dirty air minimized passing opportunities.

“It was just so hard to pass, so we did all we could we were just next best in line,”

Post-Race Reflections Amidst Continued Consistency

The late race dynamics forced Hamlin to become the pursuer, attempting to pressure Briscoe into overusing fuel. However, Briscoe kept his pace measured, sealing his first win with composure. Hamlin explained,

“It was the best option. It definitely was going to be difficult,”

—Denny Hamlin, Driver. He further described the decisive point:

“There was a key moment when the [No.] 19 and some other guys pitted and the caution came out and leaped him in front of us. At that point, we knew it was going to be really hard to pass those guys back on the racetrack,”

—Denny Hamlin, Driver.

Despite not claiming the top spot, Hamlin’s consistent performance has been remarkable. He now boasts three straight top-three finishes in 2025 and a total of six runner-up placements in the last nine Pocono races.

“The team did a great job, next best in line there of our strategy, it just didn’t work out,”

—Denny Hamlin, Driver.

Looking Ahead at Pocono’s Demanding Races

This Pocono event highlighted how fuel management and clever pit strategy can outweigh even the strongest starts. With Hamlin continuing to rack up strong finishes and Briscoe emerging as a new threat, the team dynamics at Joe Gibbs Racing could influence upcoming events. Attention will remain on how drivers adapt to changing strategies and how close Hamlin might come to another Pocono win in future challenges.
