Dale Earnhardt Jr. on Gabehart Exit: ‘Big Loss’ for JGR

Joe Gibbs Racing news shook the NASCAR world last week as Chris Gabehart, who served as competition director in 2025, was reported to be leaving the organization. The sudden exit has drawn strong reactions within the racing community, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. described Gabehart’s departure as a significant blow, emphasizing uncertainty about the reasons behind his move.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Weighs in on the Impact of Gabehart’s Departure

The news, first reported by Jenna Fryer of The Associated Press, outlined Gabehart’s rise from a highly successful tenure as crew chief for Denny Hamlin’s No. 11 team to his role as competition director at JGR. Earnhardt Jr. discussed the ramifications of the move on his podcast, expressing concern over the talent loss and the internal dynamics at Joe Gibbs Racing.

“It’s a big loss for JGR and it kind of makes you wonder what the general temperature is when a guy like that’s gonna leave the building,”

Earnhardt said on Tuesday’s Dale Jr. Download.

“It appeared that he had been elevated away from the crew chief position from Denny Hamlin into the director of competition, which is a very critical role, and I thought, ‘Man, this guy is perfect for this, and they’ll be well positioned in that role.’ So, it’s hard to imagine how he got away or what would been the cause of the departure.”

Gabehart’s Contributions and Legacy at Joe Gibbs Racing

During his six years as Hamlin’s crew chief up until 2024, Gabehart brought home 22 race wins for the No. 11 team, equaling the most prolific duo in that period with Kyle Larson and Cliff Daniels. Under Gabehart, Hamlin made three Championship 4 appearances and achieved a top-five points finish in five out of six seasons, helping establish Joe Gibbs Racing as a dominant force during their partnership. The 2025 season saw Gabehart transition to competition director, bringing his expertise to an organizational level.

Mid-Season Changes and Support for Ty Gibbs

Partway through 2025, Gabehart took on more direct involvement with Ty Gibbs and the No. 54 team. At a time when Gibbs was facing setbacks, Gabehart provided hands-on guidance that contributed to the squad’s turnaround, culminating in a win at the inaugural NASCAR In-Season Challenge. This mid-year shift in focus reportedly played a part in the events leading up to Gabehart’s decision to leave.

“They kind of found themselves in a little of a bind in the midseason with the 54 and Ty,”

Earnhardt commented.

“And I think he was kind of like, ‘Hey, I’ll come in here and see if we can get this thing in the right direction. This is a very critical car in our fleet and Ty is critical to the future of the company. We need to get this turned around and if I can help make a difference, I will.’”

“I don’t know if he chose or wanted to go through that, but he did it out of responsibility maybe. But I think the idea may have been that his director of competition role, I would assume, would have been superseding in the long-term objective for him.”

Looking Ahead: Gabehart’s Next Steps and the Future for JGR

Speculation about Gabehart’s next destination centers on Spire Motorsports, though official confirmation has not surfaced. His departure raises questions about Joe Gibbs Racing’s internal direction and the potential implications for Ty Gibbs’ development and the team’s competitive edge in coming seasons. As the organization navigates this leadership loss, the impact on their performance and strategy will be closely watched within NASCAR circles.

The transition signals a period of change at Joe Gibbs Racing, as figures like Dale Earnhardt Jr. reflect not only on Gabehart’s impressive legacy but also on the underlying challenges faced by top-tier Cup Series teams trying to maintain their edge amid evolving team structures and high-profile departures.
