Dale Earnhardt Jr. Speaks on Denny Hamlin Family Tragedy

The Denny Hamlin family tragedy has cast a heavy shadow over the NASCAR community, with recent losses deeply affecting fans, drivers, and families alike. Over the past several weeks in North Carolina, a string of devastating incidents—including a deadly plane crash involving Greg Biffle’s family and a tragic house fire at the home of Denny Hamlin’s parents—has left many reflecting on the fragility of life and the strong bonds within the racing world.

The grief began on December 18 when a Cessna C550 business jet crashed near the Statesville Regional Airport, located north of Charlotte, North Carolina. Notable former NASCAR driver Greg Biffle, his wife Cristina Grossu, their children Emma and Ryder, as well as Craig Wadsworth, Dennis Duttin, and Jack Dutton, were lost in the accident. The plane was reportedly attempting to return to the airport shortly after takeoff, according to FlightAware data. At 55 years old, Biffle left behind a legacy as one of the few drivers to have won major titles across NASCAR’s premier series. He completed his final full-time season in the Cup Series in 2016 and remained an admired member of the community, having never officially announced his retirement.

Biffle and Cristina Grossu, married in 2023, were remembered for their philanthropy and dedication as parents. Their young son Ryder was commemorated as an

active, curious, and infinitely joyful child.

The wave of sorrow continued just ten days later, when another tragedy struck. On December 28, a fire tore through Denny Hamlin’s parents’ home in Gaston County, North Carolina. Firefighters from the Lucia-Riverbend Fire Department responded and worked tirelessly for nearly two hours to control the flames, which were exacerbated by poor water access. Despite their efforts, Chief David Toomey confirmed the home was a complete loss. Nonetheless, firefighters managed to recover precious collectibles and pieces of racing memorabilia.

In the aftermath, Hamlin offered public thanks for the condolences he received and updated on his mother’s condition via social media, stating,

“Thank you to everyone who has reached out with condolences on my father’s passing,”

 he wrote.

“My mother continues to improve, and our family truly appreciates the outpouring of support and the respect for our privacy during this time.”

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Shares His Thoughts and Support

NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt Jr. addressed both incidents on his podcast, the Dale Jr. Download, voicing the emotional toll these tragedies have taken on the racing community and those close to the victims. Sharing his reaction to Biffle’s loss, Earnhardt openly empathized with the grieving families and friends, saying,

“That was really tough,” Earnhardt said of Biffle’s death.

“It was hard, and I can’t imagine what it must be like for his family, his friends, his close friends, his family members, and I’m sure they all feel absolutely devastated. We’re thinking about them. Also want to give a minute to mention Denny Hamlin and what he had to experience and go through with his father, the house fire, and his mom. I don’t have any first-hand knowledge or information but I’m hoping that his mom is doing well.”

—Dale Earnhardt Jr., NASCAR legend.

Earnhardt also addressed the emotional consequences of Hamlin’s recent struggles, highlighting the frightening nature of losing a parent in such a traumatic way:

“Tragically losing a parent, I mean, Denny had been open and vocal about his dad had an illness that’s he’s been dealing with and things weren’t looking real good long-term in that situation. Then to tragically lose him like that in a house fire, just scary. That is super, super scary. Can’t imagine how terrifying that might have been and sad for Denny to have to go through this.”

This persistent sense of shock and sorrow has rippled throughout the wider NASCAR family, with the Lucia-Riverbend Fire Department and other community responders receiving support and recognition for their efforts in extremely difficult conditions. The outpouring of sympathy from fans, drivers, and organizations has underscored the close-knit nature of the racing world in moments of adversity.

Personal Reflections and Long-Standing Bonds in Racing

Dale Earnhardt Jr. also turned a personal lens toward his relationship with Denny Hamlin, bringing color to their origins as friends and colleagues. Their connection dates back over twenty years, to a time when Hamlin was seeking his big opportunity in NASCAR, and recounts how Hamlin—before finalizing a deal with Joe Gibbs Racing—had nowhere to stay, so Earnhardt invited him to sleep on his bus during the busy Daytona 500 weekend. After Earnhardt’s win that year, Hamlin played a role in carrying the iconic Daytona 500 trophy back to the bus, an experience that cemented their camaraderie early in Hamlin’s racing career.

Earnhardt described how he got to know Greg Biffle after stepping away from regular competition, emphasizing respect and harmony on the track as well as mutual interests beyond racing. As Earnhardt shared,

“We never had a problem on the racetrack, we raced fine,”

Earnhardt said.

“When I retired and we both kind of started slowing down at the same time, I started seeing him more and Amy wanted to do some of the stuff with the animal hospitals that Greg was involved in. We would go and hang out and see Greg. We would run into each other at the lake with our boats.”
