Chase Elliott, the reigning Cook Out Clash champion, has opened up about what he believes is crucial for defending his title at the renowned Bowman Gray Stadium. With the 2026 exhibition event quickly approaching, Elliott emphasizes that success on the track begins with preparation long before race day, especially given the unique challenges of this legendary and compact short track.
Bowman Gray’s historic 0.25-mile surface is known for demanding strategy, as passing can get physical and driving from the middle of the pack requires avoiding trouble. Elliott, who races for the #9 Hendrick Motorsports team, credits last season’s results to meticulous execution, strategic heat race performance, and a focus on securing a leading position early. In 2025, he clinched pole position for the main event by winning his opening qualifying heat, which set the tone for a near-flawless weekend amidst fierce competition.
Heat Races and Track Position: Key to Cook Out Clash Success
Elliott discussed the importance of track position during FOX Sports media day, reflecting on the past year’s approach and what must be repeated to stay ahead at Bowman Gray. He highlighted how qualifying and performing well in heat races pave the way for success and noted that smooth execution is paramount—though he also acknowledged that exceptions exist in racing.

“It was a really smooth weekend for us, and I think that was probably the biggest takeaway. I think going back was qualifying well and setting a shift well for your heat race. You know, got us just into a great position to have good track position all night. I don’t necessarily think that’s the be-all and end-all. I think Ryan kind of debunked that with his performance in the main. But certainly, it would be nice to get off to good start again this year. I think we could do that.”
Elliott told Bob Pockrass.
Elliott’s reference to Ryan Blaney, who challenged upfront despite not securing the top starting spot, shows how dynamic the Cook Out Clash can be. Yet, Elliott remains committed to his calculated strategy, drawing confidence from a process-focused approach and the strength of his team at Hendrick Motorsports.
Elliott Praises Event Atmosphere Ahead of Return
Looking back on his victory at Bowman Gray, Elliott spoke positively about the energy and fan engagement at last year’s event, which saw him dominate the race by leading 171 out of 200 laps. He managed to withstand late pressure from Ryan Blaney and Denny Hamlin to clinch the win, an experience that stirs excitement leading into this year’s competition.
“I thought that the atmosphere was great and obviously we won and that was awesome but you know taking that out of the equation I really thought it was. I thought it was a great and very energetic turnout for what we had going on.”
Elliott said.
Elliott wrapped up his 2025 season eighth in the championship standings, recording two wins, 11 top-five finishes, 19 top 10 placements, and leading for 454 laps. Born in Dawsonville, Georgia, Elliott continues to be a fan favorite as he heads into another headline event for NASCAR, aiming to repeat his previous success while navigating both the on-track battles and electric crowds at Bowman Gray.
