Tim Cindric Rejoins Team Penske as McLaughlin Strategist

Tim Cindric rejoins Team Penske as the race strategist for Scott McLaughlin in the upcoming IndyCar season, following his departure from the organization last May after a technical infraction at the Indianapolis 500. Cindric, a veteran executive and strategist, will now support McLaughlin on race weekends in a more focused capacity, aiming to use his extensive experience to bolster the team’s performance.

Cindric’s Return to a Familiar Organization

Tapping into his long history with Team Penske, Cindric is stepping into the role of race strategist for McLaughlin after previously serving as both president of the organization and a key tactician, especially for Josef Newgarden, a two-time Indianapolis 500 winner. While Cindric had previously overseen significant team operations, his new position is expected to be limited to race weekends rather than the full-time demands of managing a global motorsports team. This marks a shift away from broader responsibilities, reflecting his reluctance to return to a high-pressure executive role.

Jonathan Diuguid, who recently assumed the position of team president, expressed confidence in Cindric’s impact on race day.

“Tim Cindric brings decades of experience to Scott’s timing stand, and given his experience and time within our organization, he will be a great addition to our lineup on race day in the role of race strategist,”

said Jonathan Diuguid, new team president.

Background on the May Dismissals

Cindric’s return comes after a turbulent period last May, when Roger Penske, the team’s principal, dismissed his top three executives—including Cindric—after both Josef Newgarden’s and Will Power’s cars failed inspection just before qualifying for pole position at the Indianapolis 500. This incident marked the second significant technical infraction for Team Penske within just over a year and forced a significant shake-up in leadership. While the other two executives have transitioned to roles on different teams, Cindric stands out as the only one returning to Penske, albeit in a reduced, specialized role.

McLaughlin’s Excitement for the New Partnership

Scott McLaughlin, who has shared a longstanding relationship with Cindric dating back to his move from Australia, expressed enthusiasm and gratitude for Cindric’s return to his race crew.

“Tim Cindric is a huge part of why I was able to make the journey from Australia to the IndyCar Series,”

McLaughlin said.

“We’ve had a very close relationship for many years and he’s been a tremendous help to my career. I’m so excited to get to work with him in this capacity in 2026.”

“I’ve wanted to have TC on my stand from the moment I got here. His experience, knowledge and focus are world class,”

McLaughlin added.

Looking Ahead for Team Penske

Cindric’s appointment is seen as a strategic move aimed at reinforcing Team Penske’s capabilities during critical race moments. His familiarity with the organization, deep understanding of IndyCar competition, and strong bond with McLaughlin are expected to drive improved teamwork and results. As Team Penske navigates the aftermath of recent leadership changes, Cindric’s return stands as both a homecoming and an opportunity to leverage his expertise for future successes in the IndyCar season.
