3 Tracks Missing From 2026 NASCAR Cup Series Schedule

The 2026 NASCAR Cup Series schedule, finalized in August 2025, reveals major alterations including the removal of three notable tracks. These changes highlight NASCAR’s evolving event strategy for the upcoming season and resonate strongly with fans monitoring the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series schedule.

Tracks Removed and New Additions

The Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, featured for only one season, was withdrawn after 2025. This venue is being replaced with a new street race at Naval Base Coronado, an event still planned for Father’s Day weekend in June. While this maintains the original time slot, the venue shift signals NASCAR’s openness to fresh venues and markets.

Another significant revision saw the original Chicago Street Course, introduced three years prior, taken off the calendar. In its place, Chicagoland Speedway returns. This track, located in Joliet, had not hosted a Cup Series event since 2019, missing out on the 2020 schedule due to COVID-19 constraints. Now, it steps back in to fill the void left in Chicago’s motorsports scene.

Charlotte Roval Exits as Oval Returns

After hosting races at Charlotte Motor Speedway for decades, the venue had split its annual offerings between the traditional oval and the interior road course, commonly known as the Roval, since 2018. The Roval’s presence became more pronounced during the pandemic, when adjustments to race formats were needed. However, upcoming changes mean the Roval will not appear on the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series schedule, as the track shifts its playoff event back to the historic oval for the first time since 2017.

This transition is closely connected to revisions in the playoff structure. NASCAR is discarding its four-round, 10-race playoff format inaugurated in 2014. The postseason, returning to the “Chase” title last used in 2013, will be composed entirely of oval-track events, excluding all road course contests from the decisive stretch.

Reduced Road Course and Street Racing Presence

The 2025 calendar featured five road circuits in addition to a single street race. For 2026, this has been trimmed to three road courses: Circuit of the Americas, Watkins Glen International, and Sonoma Raceway, alongside just one street circuit at Naval Base Coronado. This results in only four non-oval races, representing a sharp reduction. The last time as few as two non-oval races appeared on the calendar was 2020, when pandemic-related changes forced significant adjustments.

This reshuffling alters the complexion of the 36-race season. The focus on oval tracks now matches the layout prevalent before the introduction of circuits like the Charlotte Roval and the Chicago Street Course. These changes are expected to influence team strategies and driver preparations as the balance of track types adjusts further toward ovals.

Season Opening and Looking Ahead

The 2026 NASCAR Cup Series season is scheduled to commence on February 15 with the 68th annual Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway in Florida. This opening event, often called the “World Center of Racing,” will air live on Fox.

The decisions to rotate tracks and adjust the postseason outline emphasize NASCAR’s continuing efforts to adapt to fan interests, logistical challenges, and competitive fairness. With fewer non-oval events and the return of classic venues, the 2026 schedule presents both a nod to tradition and a path toward new experiences for drivers and spectators alike.
