Kevin Harvick Reacts to Surprising Joe Gibbs Racing Shakeup

Kevin Harvick recently shared his perspective on the sudden departure of Chris Gabehart from the Joe Gibbs Racing team, a move that has sparked attention across the NASCAR community. Harvick discussed the impact of the Joe Gibbs Racing team changes on Denny Hamlin‘s strong performance and reflected on the evolving roles within NASCAR’s top teams during a recent episode of his Happy Hour podcast.

The changes at Joe Gibbs Racing came to light after reports that Chris Gabehart left his role as competition director by December, just a year after making the switch from crew chief. While rumors have circulated about a potential move to Spire Motorsports for Gabehart, there has been no official confirmation.

Gabehart’s Career Moves and Hamlin’s Standout Season

After stepping into the role of competition director, Chris Gabehart channeled his focus toward JGR’s No. 54 entry with Ty Gibbs, guiding the young driver to victory in the In-Season Challenge. Meanwhile, Denny Hamlin partnered with Chris Gayle as his new crew chief following Gabehart’s promotion. This decision proved fruitful, as Hamlin secured six wins and reached the final four, marking one of his most accomplished NASCAR Cup Series seasons to date.

Addressing Gabehart’s influence, Harvick stated:

“Chris has been huge part of the 11 team,”

“So, as a business owner, for me, going through the years, it’s always interesting the difference between a crew chief and a competition director. I think that there’s some of those crew chiefs that can step out of that box and do things in another role. Some are just built for crew chief, right?”

Harvick further emphasized the team’s resilience and performance during the transition period:

“I think the interesting part, to me, is last I would say the 11 team was as good as they’ve ever been with a different crew chief. I think Chris being on the competition side and still being there helped that 11 team stay together, but those guys did a phenomenal job,”

Denny Hamlin and Chris Gabehart previously formed a successful partnership, achieving 22 Cup Series victories over six seasons. Their collaboration led them to three final four appearances and five top-five finishes, confirming their strong presence at the top of NASCAR competition. With Gabehart’s move to competition director, Hamlin was able to continue excelling while new leadership guided his team on race days.

Possibility of Harvick’s Return to NASCAR Inspired by Tony Stewart

In addition to discussing the Joe Gibbs Racing team changes, Harvick hinted at the possibility of returning to NASCAR competition himself. Referencing Tony Stewart’s recent selection to drive in a Truck Series event at Daytona for Kaulig Racing’s Free Agent Program, Harvick expressed interest in following Stewart’s example.

Harvick stated:

“I might just make a comeback. Tony Stewart is going to drive the Truck race at Daytona. I’m starting to get the bug again, I think,”

Kevin Harvick said.

Stewart, a three-time Cup Series champion, is set to return to Daytona International Speedway—marking his first NASCAR events in a decade. He will compete behind the wheel of Kaulig Racing’s RAM-powered truck as part of the All-Star initiative aimed at accomplished drivers. Stewart’s return could be more than a single event, with RAM reportedly offering a trophy for the top All-Star truck performer. This development has caught Harvick’s attention, making speculation about a future race appearance for the retired star more plausible.

Although Harvick currently competes part-time in the CARS Tour and other late-model series, frequently racing alongside his son Keelan Harvick, a return to the national NASCAR stage would be a major event for fans and the sport alike.

Looking Ahead: Team Dynamics and Potential Comebacks

The recent Joe Gibbs Racing team changes underscore the flexibility and adaptability required at the top level of motorsports, with Gabehart’s shift to competition director and Gayle stepping in as crew chief being notable examples. Denny Hamlin’s continued success with the No. 11 team reflects the stability of experienced personnel and the benefit of leadership transitions handled well. Meanwhile, the prospect of Kevin Harvick joining Tony Stewart in a high-profile racing return builds anticipation for future NASCAR competitions and new All-Star event formats. These developments suggest that NASCAR’s landscape will keep evolving, driven by veteran experience and fresh opportunities for both drivers and teams.
