Dario Franchitti Joins Tricon Garage for NASCAR Truck Series

Four-time NTT IndyCar Series champion Dario Franchitti is set to compete for Tricon Garage in the upcoming Tricon Garage NASCAR Truck Series event, which will launch at St. Petersburg, Florida, on Saturday, February 28. This marks Franchitti’s return to high-profile racing, entering as the driver for the No. 1 Toyota under a partnership involving Tricon Garage, Jimmie Johnson, and Legacy Motor Club, with Dollar Tree as the primary sponsor.

Franchitti’s Racing Legacy and Shift to NASCAR Trucks

The 52-year-old Scottish racer brings decades of experience to the Tricon Garage NASCAR Truck Series, with notable achievements including three Indianapolis 500 victories and a win in the 2008 Rolex 24 at Daytona alongside prominent drivers like Juan Pablo Montoya and Scott Pruett. In addition to his IndyCar accomplishments, Franchitti has previous stock car experience, having competed in both the NASCAR Cup Series and NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series in 2007 and 2008 with Chip Ganassi Racing. He made a total of 10 starts in the Cup Series and 18 in the O’Reilly Series, with a best finish of fifth at Watkins Glen International. His last championship season in IndyCar was 2011, when he started the year with a win at St. Pete.

The Excitement of Racing on a New Track

The St. Petersburg debut for the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series offers a unique street circuit experience, incorporating sections set on an airport and traditional roadways. Franchitti expressed his anticipation for this event:

“The thought of racing a NASCAR truck on a street circuit is really intriguing to me,”

Dario Franchitti, Driver

“The different surfaces, the fact that part of it is on an airport, then you go into the streets, the different bumps, all those things you got to try and master. This was just the chance to race on a circuit that I love, and a chance to do something fun. This all stemmed from a conversation with Jimmie Johnson. For me, with the opportunity to race the truck, it was really him, it was the whole team that he has there [at LMC] that made it all happen. His relationship with Toyota, Dollar Tree coming on a sponsor — it’s all been through Jimmie and the team at Legacy MC. If it goes well, great. If it doesn’t go well, I am going to be blaming Jimmie.”

Collaboration with Jimmie Johnson and Legacy Motor Club

This opportunity materialized through the involvement of Jimmie Johnson and Legacy Motor Club, who played a significant role in bringing Franchitti into the fold at Tricon Garage. Their relationship and mutual respect set the stage for this unique entry, as highlighted by Johnson:

“Dario and I had been talking for a long time about the chance to race together, so when he approached me about St. Petersburg, I knew I had to get to work,”

Jimmie Johnson, Legacy Motor Club

“I called him back a day later with an incredible opportunity to join a championship-winning team with Toyota and the great people at Tricon.

“It’s been a lot of fun getting him integrated into the team and spending more time together, going through the process of getting him back to racing. I’m so excited it all came together and thankful that Dollar Tree is going to support. I am looking forward to sitting on the pit box alongside the team and sharing this experience with Dario.”

Continued Impact on the Racing Scene

Since his retirement from full-time driving in 2013, Dario Franchitti has stayed active within motorsports as a broadcast analyst and as an adviser and driver coach at Chip Ganassi Racing. His experience and insights are expected to enrich Tricon Garage’s efforts in their quest for success in the NASCAR Truck Series, especially with a seasoned team including Legacy Motor Club and Toyota’s support.

As the debut race in St. Petersburg approaches, Dario Franchitti’s involvement is anticipated to raise the profile of the Tricon Garage NASCAR Truck Series, bringing in new fans and adding another exciting chapter to his storied career. The collaboration among motorsports veterans and established racing organizations suggests the event could have a lasting influence on both the NASCAR scene and street circuit racing developments in the future.
