Denny Hamlin to Race 2026 Season With Shoulder Injury

Denny Hamlin will compete in the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series season despite battling a recurring shoulder injury, which he confirmed will persist through the entirety of the season. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver shared news of his condition on Wednesday in Winston-Salem, N.C., as he prepared for the Clash at Bowman Gray Stadium.

Details of the Injury and Recent Setbacks

Hamlin explained that his shoulder problems began after falling while moving through debris at his parents’ house, which was destroyed in a December fire. This incident resulted in a re-tear of his left shoulder, the same one he had previously undergone surgery for before the 2024 season. Despite the severity of the injury, Hamlin stated he would not pursue another surgery immediately, opting instead to manage pain and limited mobility throughout the 2026 season.

He emphasized his intention to focus on maintaining enough range of motion to complete the season, with the plan to schedule another operation after the racing year concludes in November.

“It’s torn, but it’s still got a few little parts and pieces hanging on that I need to keep intact for the year,”

Hamlin said.

Uncertainty Surrounds Recovery Timeline

The long-term impact of the injury remains unclear. When asked how long the shoulder issue would affect his performance, Hamlin said,

“I wish I could predict the future, that I could tell you, but I just don’t know,”

Hamlin said. He went on to mention the diligence he brings to his preparations, given the responsibilities of leading his team.

Dedicated Despite Major Distractions

Despite facing significant personal and professional challenges during the offseason—including litigation involving 23XI Racing, Front Row Motorsports, and NASCAR, as well as the loss of his father and injuries sustained by his mother in the fire—Hamlin declined to use these distractions as excuses.

He explained,

“So I’ve done as much as I feel like I can to be prepared, given the amount of time that I’ve got, given all the stuff that I have going on. They know that once I get in that car, they never question whether I’m capable of going out there and competing and giving them their best opportunity to win.”

This reflects his continued commitment to his team and the entire Joe Gibbs Racing organization throughout the season.

Physical and Mental Challenges Await

The injury is not the only hurdle Hamlin faces at the start of the Cup Series. Time spent addressing off-track matters during the winter means he may contend with race rust in addition to shoulder pain. Hamlin admitted he does not yet feel comfortable pushing his No. 11 Toyota to its limits on high-speed tracks like Kansas, but upcoming events on shorter circuits may provide a less demanding re-entry as he adapts to his limitations.

Implications for Joe Gibbs Racing and the 2026 Season

Hamlin’s ability to lead his team—despite the ongoing physical setback—will likely play a critical role in Joe Gibbs Racing’s 2026 campaign. His openness about the injury demonstrates transparency with his team, sponsors, and fans, and underscores the physical and emotional demands NASCAR drivers face beyond the racetrack. As he manages both pain and pressure, Hamlin’s experience this season may influence team dynamics and championship outcomes, keeping the focus on his determination to race through adversity.
