“This kid is either going to be a race car driver or President of the United States,”
Jim thought at the time.
“He’s just got that aura about him, and he’s had it his entire life,”
Jim said.
At only four years old, Connor tried his hand at go-karting, starting before the minimum age requirement at Carolina Motorsports Park. Track officials quickly noticed his natural ability behind the wheel and allowed him to compete.
Desiring to nurture Connor’s budding skills, Jim found creative ways for him to practice, even organizing makeshift kart runs through their Charlotte neighborhood. He would tie a green rope to the kart and run behind to ensure Connor’s safety.
“I’d pay $10,000 for that video,”
Jim laughed, recalling neighbors recording the memorable sight.
As Connor’s skills sharpened, the Zilisch family traveled to races across the United States. In Indiana, Jim found himself defending his son’s racing integrity when skeptical fathers, surprised at Connor’s repeated victories, accused him of cheating. Meanwhile, at Homestead-Miami Speedway, racing icon Juan Pablo Montoya observed Connor’s kart after a race, recognizing his ability.
“After a while, they all came to realize it was skill, not cheating,”
Jim said.
“But there were an awful lot of eyebrows raised.”
The Role of Family Heritage in Shaping a Champion
Connor’s competitive drive can also be traced to his mother, Jan Zilisch, a former Canadian gymnast who qualified for the 1984 Olympic team and achieved All-American status at the University of Florida. That background proved critical when Connor began racing in European karting events at age 11, frequently spending several weeks overseas. Since both Jim and Jan worked full-time—Jan as a cancer biotech executive with a doctorate in pharmacology—Connor often lived abroad with his coach and mechanic, Gary Willis, gaining independence as well as racing experience.
“He never complained, he rarely called,”
Jan said.
“He just loved being out and discovering different countries.”
When Connor occasionally expressed frustration about missing home or school, Jan drew on her own discipline as a gymnast to encourage resilience.
“I used to have to sit in the gym for 40 hours a week and travel across the world for gymnastics,”
she’d remind him.
“And there was no end of the road where I could get paid.”
From Karting Victories to NASCAR Ambitions
In 2017, Connor clinched a landmark karting victory in Italy, outperforming 164 of the world’s best, including Kimi Antonelli, who would later join Mercedes in Formula 1. Despite this international success, the Zilisch family faced financial limitations that made pursuing an F1 career unattainable. Connor returned to the U.S., uncertain about his racing future.
