Kyle Larson Eyes First Daytona 500 Win After Self-Doubt

Kyle Larson arrives at Daytona International Speedway eager to claim his first victory in the Daytona 500, a race that has long challenged even seasoned champions. The accomplished driver enters the season opener stronger than ever, determined to convert years of close calls and self-doubt into the triumph that has eluded him.

From Self-Doubt to Renewed Confidence

Larson, a California native and two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion, once believed the Great American Race was beyond his reach. During the Daytona 500 Media Day, he openly addressed his earlier feelings of inadequacy about winning at Daytona:

“Honestly, in the past, up until the last few years, I just didn’t think that I was good enough to win,”

Larson said.

Now, riding high after clinching his second Cup Series title at Phoenix Raceway, Larson has shaken off his doubts. He sees this Sunday’s 68th running as a genuine opportunity, noting it would be the perfect moment to secure the Harley J. Earl Trophy. Confidence, however, doesn’t guarantee results, as he candidly reminded those watching:

“Now I feel like I could see it happening and not be complete luck,”

Kyle Larson stated regarding his expectations for his 13th start in the 2026 season opener.

“That gets me excited, but that doesn’t guarantee anything.”

Career Near-Misses and Recent Performance

Despite 23 starts at Daytona’s tri-oval—12 during the Daytona 500 and 11 in summer’s Coke Zero 400—Larson’s best finish at the 500 has been seventh, achieved in both 2016 and 2019. Last summer, he improved with a sixth-place finish in the Coke Zero 400, proving his abilities at superspeedways are strong and evolving.

Larson scored the second-most points at these tracks last season. In last year’s Daytona 500, however, he placed 20th, a result he hopes to improve. Larson believes his team’s recent form reflects their speed and sharpness, but acknowledges that results at Daytona depend on more than just skill.

Resilience Amid Daytona’s Challenges

The unpredictability and risk on superspeedways test even top competitors, and Larson recognizes the ever-present threat of crashes upending strong performances. Reflecting on last year’s race and the overall performance of his team, Larson explained:

“Last year was rewarding because I feel like the last four years our team is one of the best performing teams, but we just haven’t got the finishes to go along with it,”

he said.

“I think most of the competitors would agree that we are usually up in the front eight positions.”

He spoke of finishing among the frontrunners and largely steering clear of accidents, which led to a sense of accomplishment despite not clinching the win. Larson noted the perception among media members that he has figured out Daytona’s superspeedway racing, but he cautioned that fortunes in the 500 can change instantly:

“But it could quickly change and we could get wrapped up in a wreck again and its back to I suck. But as always, we are just going to try and do what we can to be up in the front and be in the safest position to go and chase the win.”

Legacy and Perspective on Winning

At 33 years old, Larson is reaching his peak but he maintains that his career will not be diminished if the Daytona 500 continues to evade him. He expresses a deep respect for the race and recognizes that not every great driver has won it. Larson shared his perspective about chasing Daytona glory:

“Obviously we all would love to win this race in our careers,”

Larson said.

“But if it doesn’t happen it’s not going to make my career feel any less to me.”

Looking Ahead to Race Day

Larson’s resilience and outlook as he aims for his first Daytona 500 triumph stand as testament to his growth as both a competitor and a person. As he prepares for what could be a historic 13th attempt, fans and NASCAR insiders alike are watching closely to see if Larson can finally break through and claim the win that has so far escaped him. Regardless of the outcome on Sunday, Larson’s determination to excel at Daytona continues to define his approach and inspire followers of the NASCAR Cup Series.
