Corey Heim made headlines with his eye-catching performance in the Corey Heim Daytona 500 qualifying session, earning a spot in NASCAR’s marquee race on his very first attempt. Competing for 23XI Racing, Heim posted one of the fastest laps among the eight hopeful Open entries, joining Justin Allgaier in advancing, and securing his participation in the 2026 Daytona 500.
Heim’s Path from Truck Series Champion to Daytona Glory
The previous year, Heim was crowned Truck Series champion after notching a remarkable 12 race wins. This achievement paved the way for his opportunity to test his skill at the Cup Series level, demonstrating why many considered him a rising talent in the sport.
Transitioning to the Next Gen car at Daytona for the qualifying session, Heim faced new challenges, needing to adapt quickly, especially with high expectations following his success the prior season.
“I had to tell myself like 10 times before qualifying to remind myself of the RPMs and when to shift and stuff. With the trucks, we have our RPM number. I’ve almost got to integrate it into my brain at this point,”
Heim explained as he adapted to the new machinery.
“I don’t have to look at the dash. Like, I hear the RPM on my shift, you know? It’s so wired to me,”
Heim added, describing his ingrained routine from truck racing.
An Impressive Qualifying Performance Under Pressure
During Round 1 of qualifying, Heim posted the fifth-fastest lap, solidifying his place among the top competitors in the session. Justin Allgaier and Corey LaJoie were also in the hunt, with Allgaier finishing 14th and LaJoie trailing Allgaier by just 0.004 seconds, leaving all three inside the top ten early on.
The fast-paced qualifying format meant only the ten quickest drivers advanced to Round 2, which raised the tension among the Open entries. Heim revealed that the prospect of going head-to-head with both Allgaier and LaJoie was unexpected, noting that it was uncommon to see multiple Open entry drivers reach the final round together.
Ultimately, both Allgaier and LaJoie were bumped out of the top ten, clearing the way for Heim to secure his Daytona 500 spot. This outcome helped quiet doubts about whether Heim could qualify at all, considering the competitive field and new vehicle dynamics.
Looking Toward a Bright Future with 23XI Racing
Heim’s confirmed entry at Daytona marks the beginning of a 12-race Cup Series campaign with 23XI Racing for 2026. The accomplishment stands as his next step towards a potential full-time seat with the organization, as he continues to prove himself against the best in the sport. The upcoming Daytona Duels will set his final starting position, promising more excitement ahead for Heim, his team, and NASCAR fans eagerly watching his progress.
