Joe Gibbs Racing team changes have taken center stage in the NASCAR Cup Series, as the organization shifts direction ahead of the 2026 season. Following the December 2025 departure of Chris Gabehart, longtime competition director, team owner Joe Gibbs announced a significant organizational overhaul to address competition decisions moving forward.
Committee Replaces Traditional Leadership After Gabehart’s Departure
In a discussion with SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, Joe Gibbs explained that the team has opted not to appoint a replacement competition director. Instead, a committee will now oversee the critical decisions related to making the cars race-ready and competitive each week. Wally Brown, previously involved in a similar capacity but on a part-time basis, will return as a key member of this new group, joining three additional committee members.
This newly established committee is tasked with enhancing the Joe Gibbs Racing vehicles’ performance throughout the season. Rather than exerting top-down control, Gibbs emphasized the group will be guided and supported by team management. The goal is to enable these technical experts to work collaboratively, with leadership providing the necessary resources for success. In Joe Gibbs’ words:
“Yeah, just after the season Chris [Gabehart] and I met, and we just decided to go our separate ways. And because of that, what we did is Wally Brown came back as he had been in that role. He was working less time with us, like three days a week, but brought Wally back, and he’s great in that role.”
The decision to form a committee, rather than rely on a single decision-maker, marks a significant cultural shift for the team. By sharing responsibility among several engineers and competition experts, Gibbs hopes to drive weekly improvements and maintain focus on race-day performance. He explained:
“We just had our competition meeting yesterday, and then we have four others that work on a committee. Then they’re focused on week to week. We have other people that assist them. Okay, but there are the ones that have to make our cars go fast. They’re focused on week-to-week going fast. Everybody else in the company, including me, assist them. And my job is to get them the money it takes to help us go fast,” he concluded.
Chris Gabehart’s Career at Joe Gibbs Racing and Influence on Team Success
Chris Gabehart originally joined Joe Gibbs Racing in 2012 as an engineer, steadily progressing through the ranks. After demonstrating skill in the Xfinity Series as crew chief, Gabehart partnered with Denny Hamlin in NASCAR’s Cup Series, guiding the veteran driver’s performances. His promotion to director of competition was the final step before departing the organization following the 2025 season.
Denny Hamlin Responds to Team Changes and Gabehart’s Departure
The impact of Gabehart’s move was deeply felt by both the team and driver Denny Hamlin. Hamlin delivered a trio of wins in the 2024 season’s opening races, yet despite a strong start, fell short in his championship pursuit and set his sights on 2025. After Gabehart’s shift into management, Joe Gibbs Racing named Chris Gayle as the new crew chief for Hamlin’s #11 Toyota Camry XSE, marking another notable change in team leadership. Hamlin reacted to these shifts, stating:
“The first few days was a shock, but I’m moving on. There’s nothing I can do to change anything that happened, and JGR is doing what they feel is best for them, and I totally understand that. And if all of our program gets better, the 11 car’s gonna run better as well, right?” — Denny Hamlin, Driver
The partnership between Hamlin and Gabehart yielded significant achievements over a five-year period, including 22 victories and consecutive Daytona 500 titles in 2019 and 2020. They also consistently finished among the top contenders in final championship standings, never ending a season worse than eighth place, a testament to their effectiveness as a duo in the organization.
What These Changes Mean for Joe Gibbs Racing Going Forward
With the implementation of their committee-driven competitive strategy and notable changes within the team’s leadership ranks, Joe Gibbs Racing is entering a period of uncertainty and anticipation. The adaptation aims to preserve the strengths that carried them to past victories, such as their consistent top-level performance and ability to adapt, all while inviting innovation through collaboration.
As the team prepares for the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series season, it will be closely watched to see if these Joe Gibbs Racing team changes enable further triumphs, especially for drivers like Denny Hamlin, who seek another shot at the championship. The focus remains on ensuring their cars remain at the front of the pack and that the new committee model fosters both speed and adaptability as racing evolves.
