Joe Gibbs Racing Lawsuit Alleges Data Theft by Ex-Director

Joe Gibbs Racing has initiated a federal case in the Western District of North Carolina, targeting Christopher Gabehart, their former Competition Director, for allegedly misappropriating confidential team data prior to his transition to a leadership post at Spire Motorsports. The Joe Gibbs Racing lawsuit claims that Gabehart, ahead of his November 2025 resignation, captured images of sensitive documents, transferred proprietary files to a personal Google Drive marked “Spire,” and kept race strategy details, analytics, payroll, driver salaries, and sponsorship revenue numbers.

Claims of Contract Breach and Demand for Major Damages

According to the court complaint, Joe Gibbs Racing insists these taken materials constitute protected trade secrets under the federal Defend Trade Secrets Act and North Carolina statutes. The organization also cites breaches of confidentiality, non-compete, and non-solicitation contracts signed by Gabehart. The lawsuit requests an injunction to stop any further use or disclosure of the data, claiming damages exceeding $8 million with potential for additional penalties and attorneys’ fees. The central legal question revolves around whether the information qualifies as safeguarded trade secrets and if Gabehart’s actions violated his employment agreements during his move to Spire Motorsports.

Case Raises Concerns Over Team Security and Competitive Integrity

The allegations have heightened concerns within the motorsports industry about internal security, employee contract enforcement, and the safeguarding of competitive data. The outcome may impact how teams like Joe Gibbs Racing and Spire Motorsports manage proprietary information and staff transitions, underscoring increased scrutiny on sensitive data handling in high-stakes racing environments.
