Carson Hocevar Brushes Off Hamlin Criticism After Atlanta Race

Carson Hocevar, driver for Spire Motorsports, addressed criticism that followed his Atlanta race, offering his reaction in an interview on Jeff Gluck’s podcast. The Carson Hocevar Atlanta race reaction comes after his bold moves during the Autotrader 400, drawing attention from fellow competitors and fans alike.

Hocevar Responds to Questions About His On-Track Decisions

During the Autotrader 400, Hocevar staged a notable comeback, overcoming setbacks such as a flat tire and a damaged window, managing to lead the field with one lap to go. However, his aggressive driving during the race, especially on the first overtime restart where contact with frontrunners led to Christopher Bell‘s crash, ignited controversy. Denny Hamlin publicly criticized Hocevar on his podcast and defended his stance when questioned by a fan. These criticisms spurred Hocevar to clarify his intentions publicly.

Addressing the accusations that his racing style is meant to stir drama or media attention, Hocevar made his position clear:

“I’m not out there driving and going ‘ah you know, I want to sell some more t-shirts. I’m going to split this hole or I’m going to make this move and yeah, they’ll talk about that and then in the interview, ah, did you did you see that? Did you did you see what I did?’ And, you know, cut a WWE promo,” he said. [3:38 onwards]

He went on to dismiss much of the criticism as mere background noise:

“Like the rest is noise, and I laugh at it sometimes,” Hocevar dadded, “or I see it, but there’s not one bit where I look at, you know, any podcast or anything. I just look at it and go, you know, that’s just entertainment.”

Despite the controversy, Hocevar secured a fourth-place finish. The race weekend was notable for him in other ways as well, as he played a role in helping Kyle Busch win a third consecutive Truck Series event at Atlanta the previous day. Their celebratory high-five during Busch’s victory burnout quickly went viral online, a moment Hocevar later described as a calculated move to generate social media buzz for his team, calling it a “business decision.”

Reflecting on the Incident With Christopher Bell

On the podcast, Hocevar also addressed whether he planned to reach out to Christopher Bell regarding the on-track incident. Emphasizing his preference for resolving racing disputes through competition rather than discussion, Hocevar shared his perspective:

“I don’t know what me saying anything would would do for him, right? I don’t really like the conversation stuff. Like I feel like if he has to race me harder, like me saying anything is not probably going to change that.”

This attitude is consistent with Hocevar’s history at Atlanta, where last year he was also known for his aggressive moves, including an early spin involving Ryan Blaney. Criticism followed, but Hocevar did not apologize for taking risks when he saw a chance at victory.

Looking Ahead to the Next Race at COTA

Hocevar’s next challenge is at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas. Unlike on oval tracks, the Portage, Michigan native has struggled on road courses, yet to break into the top ten at COTA. Nevertheless, he demonstrated potential last year with a top-five starting position at the venue.

The reaction to Hocevar’s performance and subsequent comments highlights ongoing debates in NASCAR about racing conduct, driver intent, and the line between entertainment and competition. As the season continues, attention will remain on whether Hocevar’s assertive style translates into more success—or further controversy—on tracks like Circuit of the Americas.
