Joey Logano shared a vivid memory from his early career involving NASCAR icon Cale Yarborough during a Columbia event, as anticipation mounts for the upcoming Goodyear 400 at Darlington Raceway. Highlighting his unique connection to Cale Yarborough NASCAR legacy, Logano looked back on a rookie moment that helped shape his perspective on racing at one of NASCAR’s most storied tracks.
Logano Opens Up About His First Darlington Experience
On February 24, at the Governor’s Mansion in Columbia, Joey Logano spoke alongside Darlington Raceway president Josh Harris and South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster. As one of NASCAR’s prominent figures and a spring race winner at Darlington, Logano recounted his unforgettable introduction to the iconic track in 2009, focusing on a ride that would forever influence his racing mentality.
With the Goodyear 400 set for March 22 at the historic South Carolina oval, Logano’s memories held extra meaning. The promotional event set the tone for next month’s race weekend while paying tribute to the personalities and traditions that define the venue known to fans as “The Lady in Black.”
“The first time I went around there was with Cale Yarborough, and that’s probably one of the coolest moments of my life. There’s a two-seater race car down there and we’re promoting the race, much like we are today. And Cale was there and he gave me a ride,” he said at the event (1:08 onwards).
“I remember just sitting in the passenger seat watching Cale Yarborough drive me around Darlington, thinking this is the most surreal moment and the coolest thing I’ve ever seen. It’s just fun doing that, that day and getting to know him a little bit,” he continued.
At the time, Logano was launching his Cup Series career with Joe Gibbs Racing. The laps with Cale Yarborough went beyond a ceremonial showcase, as the three-time champion has since credited the legend’s influence with shaping his ongoing approach to Darlington’s challenges.
The Enduring Challenge of Darlington
Darlington Raceway, often called
“The Track Too Tough To Tame,”
is famous for its demanding layout and rich history. Joey Logano emphasized the meaning behind the track’s many nicknames, sharing that these labels capture the oval’s unique spirit and notoriously challenging nature.
“I was thinking about earlier about Darlington and all the nicknames it has, and I started thinking about like your friends that have a lot of nicknames are usually characters, right? There’s usually a lot of different things about them that make them stand out. And when you think of Darlington, a Track Too Tough To Tame, The Lady in Black, it’s tough, right?” he said.
“It’s hard to do that to get around that place and whether it’s the Southern 500 or the Goodyear 400. It’s one of those racetracks that every driver wants to say they’ve won at… it’s definitely one that sits on the top of our list to try to get a victory at,” Joey Logano added (0:26 onwards).
Logano’s record at Darlington includes a spring race victory in 2022, but his top-10 track performances remain rare in the Next Gen era. Driving for Team Penske in the No. 22 car, he aims to further his success in the upcoming 2026 Goodyear 400, scheduled for March 22 at 3:00 p.m. ET on FS1.
Honoring NASCAR Traditions with Throwback Tributes
NASCAR’s throwback weekend, introduced in 2015, later moved from the traditional Southern 500 to the spring Goodyear 400. Due to teams’ concerns over costs, participation in the throwback theme has become voluntary rather than mandated.
Last year, Joey Logano participated by unveiling a tribute paint scheme reminiscent of Cale Yarborough’s famous car, emphasizing the importance of honoring history and legends associated with Darlington and NASCAR at large.
“Last year, we ran a throwback scheme to Cale’s car. I thought that was just something special, it being home for him there, and we just won our 3rd championship. He’s a 3-time champion. I want to pay respect to that,” he said at the same event (1:35 onwards).
This act of respect paid homage to Yarborough’s accomplishments and celebrated their shared milestone as three-time champions. Through throwback liveries and by retelling stories of legends like Cale Yarborough, NASCAR drivers like Logano help preserve the sport’s deep-rooted traditions and elevate its sense of heritage.
Looking Ahead: Logano’s Upcoming Races and the NASCAR Calendar
With the Goodyear 400 just weeks away, Joey Logano’s immediate focus shifts to Circuit of the Americas, where he has competed five times, notching one top-five finish and an average result of 19.4. The challenge of COTA offers another opportunity to build momentum before returning to Darlington’s tricky oval—one of the circuits he holds in high regard for its difficulty and prestige among drivers wanting to join its list of winners.
As teams and fans look forward to the Goodyear 400, the memory of Cale Yarborough’s legacy and Logano’s personal journey remain shining examples of the passion and competitive spirit that define NASCAR’s biggest weekends at Darlington and beyond. The ongoing blend of reverence for the past and drive for future glory ensures stories like Logano’s continue to inspire new generations of drivers and fans alike.
