Four-time IndyCar Series Champion Dario Franchitti is making his highly anticipated return to NASCAR at St. Petersburg, marking his first start in the series since 2008. This special appearance is thanks in large part to Jimmie Johnson NASCAR mentorship, with Johnson playing a pivotal role in persuading Franchitti back behind the wheel for this nationally sanctioned event.
Franchitti’s Comeback Backed by Johnson’s Support
After a decade-long hiatus from national competition, Franchitti, who last claimed the IndyCar St. Pete Grand Prix in 2011, will drive the No. 1 Tricon Garage Toyota on the iconic streets of St. Pete. His friend Jimmie Johnson, a legendary seven-time NASCAR Cup Series Champion and current team owner at NASCAR Cup Series Legacy Motor Club, has been instrumental in orchestrating Franchitti’s return to stock car racing. Johnson not only encouraged Franchitti to join the field, but will also provide hands-on guidance throughout the race weekend from the pit box.
“He’s worked hard at putting this whole thing together from the very first conversation,”
Franchitti said about NASCAR Hall of Famer Johnson, highlighting the dedication Johnson has brought to the project.
Mentorship and Experience on Race Day
Johnson’s involvement stretches beyond motivation, as he personally offers tactical advice and mentorship to Franchitti. In preparation for the event, Johnson has been in frequent communication to ensure Franchitti is set for every aspect of the race. “Jimmie is going to be there giving me advice. Even two nights ago he’s on the phone 11:00 at night and 7:00 the next morning talking about restarts. He’s fully into it (smiling).
Despite a lengthy gap since his last NASCAR outing, Franchitti is keenly aware of the value that Johnson brings with his immense experience.
“When you have a seven-time NASCAR champion with you there getting that information, I wish he’d been there in 2008 doing that job. It would have helped,”
Franchitti joked, reflecting on his earlier stint in the series nearly twenty years ago.
Johnson’s guidance gives Franchitti confidence, but also comes with some light-hearted self-awareness about returning to the intensity of NASCAR racing.
“There’s no substitute for experience. He might be thinking at some point he wished he got in the truck and drove it here instead of me, depending on how I get on.”
What This Return Means for Racing
Franchitti’s return to NASCAR, facilitated by Jimmie Johnson’s mentorship, adds excitement and veteran presence to the event in St. Petersburg. As both a former IndyCar champion and now a returning stock car competitor, Franchitti’s participation alongside Johnson’s strategic support draws fresh attention to the race and the ongoing collaboration between champions. Fans and competitors alike will be watching closely this weekend to see how this unique partnership unfolds on the streets of St. Pete.
