Shane van Gisbergen Eyes Historic Sixth Road Win at COTA

Shane van Gisbergen enters the Circuit of The Americas in Austin, Texas, this Sunday, looking to achieve a record-tying sixth consecutive road course victory in the NASCAR Cup Series. His pursuit of history has drawn attention, as a triumph would match Jeff Gordon’s long-standing streak and pull him even with Chase Elliott for the most road course wins among active drivers. The Shane van Gisbergen road course performance is central to the anticipation surrounding this weekend’s event.

Dominance on the Road Circuits Defines Recent Success

During the 2025 Cup Series season, van Gisbergen rose above his peers on road courses, securing 293 points—an impressive 73 more than his nearest challenger, Christopher Bell. His season included a sweep of the last five road-course races, beginning with a dominant win at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico City. In that race, he finished a commanding 16.5 seconds ahead of the field, establishing an emphatic tone for the year.

If van Gisbergen claims victory at COTA, he will have matched some of the sport’s greats, including tying Jeff Gordon’s streak from 1997 to 2000 and joining Chase Elliott in the ranks of seven road course victories for active drivers. Reflecting on what such an achievement would mean, van Gisbergen shared:

Kevin Harvick, I did an interview with him the other day and he brought that up. It’s a very different time with a lot more races per year, but as a crew last year, we had an amazing year, and it would be awesome to carry that on into this year.

Setting Records and Cementing a Legacy

Van Gisbergen’s 2025 results were not just victories, they were dominant performances. He posted some of the largest victory margins on road courses since 1996, notably winning at Watkins Glen International by 11.1 seconds and at Charlotte Motor Speedway Roval by 15.1 seconds. His extraordinary pace last season led to multiple races where the win margin exceeded 15 seconds—a feat last accomplished in 1966.

In his rookie campaign across six road-course events, van Gisbergen led in more than half the laps and maintained a top-five position for 85% of the races. Racing Insights found he spent only a minimal fraction of laps outside the top 10, solidifying his reputation as a road course master among his peers and fans alike.

COTA: The Elusive Prize for van Gisbergen

Despite his road course dominance, COTA remains a challenge for van Gisbergen. In his two NASCAR Cup starts at the Austin venue, he has yet to enjoy the victory celebration that has become his trademark, which includes punting a rugby ball into the stands. His only appearance in the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series at COTA also ended in disappointment—after a late-race contest with Austin Hill and being penalized for cutting the course, he finished 27th behind Kyle Larson.

He reflected on his experience at the Texas track:

I like the place. I just haven’t managed to put a full race together,

– Shane van Gisbergen. His pace has been consistently strong, but converting speed into a COTA win has proven elusive:

I think every race I’ve done here in the NASCAR series, I’ve been reasonably quick, but for one reason or another, I haven’t managed to get it done.

Past Challenges and a Renewed Focus

Van Gisbergen’s previous Cup outings at COTA were marked by miscues. In 2024, while driving for Kaulig Racing, a pit road speeding violation dropped him out of contention, finishing 20th. In another race, after leading 23 laps, he was shuffled out of the front positions and crossed the finish line in sixth, during only the third time Trackhouse Racing entered a third full-time car.

On the team’s early challenges at COTA, van Gisbergen said:

Last year, it was the third race again, so we were very new with Trackhouse,

– Shane van Gisbergen. Reflecting on his own performance and the team’s development, he added:

I made some mistakes and we weren’t really there yet as a team early in the year. Hopefully, that compounds and we’re a bit stronger this year.

Chasing Milestones and the Road Ahead

As van Gisbergen prepares for his 53rd career Cup start, he is in position to chase another modern era milestone: becoming the fastest driver to reach seven Cup Series wins in the current generation of the sport. The outcome at Circuit of The Americas will not only influence his place in history but may also signal a shift in the competitive narrative for Shane van Gisbergen and his rivals, including names such as Jeff Gordon, Chase Elliott, Kyle Larson, and Christopher Bell.

This weekend, the spotlight at COTA will center on whether van Gisbergen’s road course expertise translates to another entry in the record books, while teams and fans wait to see if history will be made on the twisting Texas circuit.
