At the Busch household, what began as a regular day turned unexpectedly chaotic as Kyle Busch attempted to repair a malfunctioning smoke detector upstairs. “I get up on the stool and as I’m reaching up with my second arm, the stool explodes,”

“As soon as he said, ‘You’re bleeding,’ I look down, and it’s not like you’re bleeding like a nosebleed. It is like pouring. Like, you’re gushing. … I’m like, ‘This is hospital grade,’”
Busch said.
Samantha Busch, Kyle’s wife, immediately rushed him to the hospital, with his injured leg supported on towels across the dashboard. The scene was shocking for the family as they tried to grasp what had just happened.

“When they lifted up his leg, he’s not kidding. This flap was down and it was just gushing,”
Samantha said.
The medical team proceeded with caution, bringing in a doctor to ensure there were no foreign objects, like porcelain, in the gash. Fortunately, the injury was serious but could have been much worse, narrowly missing a major muscle.
“Just sliced the fat, folks. Didn’t even get a muscle,”
Kyle Busch said.

“Thank God, though, because this was less than a week out before Bowman Gray. Like, you would not have been racing,”
Samantha told Kyle.
Luckily, Busch was able to recover enough to race and went on to secure pole position for the Daytona 500—an achievement he’d never reached before. Despite this highlight, the rest of his 2026 season has presented challenges. Competing for Richard Childress Racing, Busch has yet to finish in the top 10 after four races, with his best result being 12th place at Circuit of The Americas. He currently stands 20th in the overall points.
