Rockingham Speedway NASCAR Revival: Prospects, Progress, and Uncertainties

Rockingham Speedway NASCAR Revival: When North Wilkesboro triumphantly re-entered NASCAR, it ignited speculation about other historic tracks following suit. Federal grants, spurred by COVID-19, have revved up renovations in many such venues nationwide. Among them, Rockingham Speedway stands out with notable strides in progress.

During a recent session between the Richmond County Board of Commissioners and Finance Director Cary Garner, the aim to prepare this historical track for NASCAR Cup races was resoundingly highlighted. Track owner Daniel Lovenheim previously anticipated the track to be race-ready by early 2024. Yet, the burning question remains: will the Cup Series ever hit the Rockingham Speedway grid again?

In a recent meeting, Chairman Jeff Smart resonated a sentiment: “The clear objective is to bring NASCAR back—not just for financial reasons but to enhance our quality of life. Let’s reignite the racing fervor at ‘the rock’.” It’s been a staggering 19 years since a Cup Series race roared around the oval. Though a decade ago, the local community savored some speed through Truck races, it was but a fleeting joy.

With a $9 million boost from the Department of Commerce in May 2022, Rockingham Speedway has undergone extensive refurbishments to meet NASCAR’s standards. Updates were discussed in the recent meeting. Notable figures in the sport, including Richard Petty and Terry Labonte, have expressed their fondness for the track and support its revival.

While a potential return of Rockingham would invoke nostalgic sentiments and mark a dramatic comeback, various factors cast doubt on its future Cup Series prospects.

NASCAR has been actively expanding its horizons, targeting foreign and younger audiences through initiatives like Garage56, Project91, and ventures like NASCAR Canada. With NASCAR’s focus beyond U.S. borders, doubts loom whether NASCAR executives would favor reviving a local market that offers limited economic benefits.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. echoed similar concerns, noting, “I worry about Rockingham’s future because many in the industry might perceive revisiting there as a step back rather than forward.”

Another roadblock for NASCAR’s pursuit of Rockingham is its independent ownership. Within a landscape where most tracks are under NASCAR or Speedway Motorsports, backing an independent track—despite its storied history—seems unlikely.

Additionally, a potential TV ratings slump looms if Rockingham returns. Despite North Wilkesboro‘s celebrated return, it garnered low TV ratings. With larger tracks nearby offering more compelling on-site views, Rockingham’s appeal to NASCAR as a profit-making entity is questionable.

Amidst these hurdles, an Xfinity or Truck event might be on the cards for Rockingham. Time will reveal if the track truly becomes “NASCAR-ready” with its newfound funding.
