Connor Zilisch Eyes NASCAR Glory After Daytona Heartbreak

Connor Zilisch’s NASCAR career takes center stage this year after an emotional loss at the 64th Rolex 24 at Daytona, where the young driver and his Whelen Cadillac team finished agonizingly close to victory. The North Carolina native’s journey from a painful Daytona setback to renewed ambition in the Cup Series highlights both his resilience and aspiration for motorsport’s highest levels.

Daytona’s Drama Leaves Zilisch Wanting More

The 2025 Rolex 24 at Daytona was meant to be a triumphant homecoming for Connor Zilisch, but a series of challenging moments saw his return end with heartbreak. Zilisch, joining teammates Jack Aitken, Earl Bamber, and Frederic Vesti in the No. 31 Whelen Cadillac for Action Express Racing, was determined to capture the prestigious IMSA endurance crown. Instead, cruel racing luck intervened, and the team narrowly missed a storybook win.

Despite a determined fight during the final laps, the Whelen Cadillac crossed the line just 1.5 seconds behind the leaders, cementing a runner-up finish that stung even more given the effort to rebound from an early lap deficit. Six hours of yellow-flag conditions due to dense fog tested drivers and pit crews, forcing long periods of slow-speed driving and interrupting any rhythm. Zilisch had the tough job of driving more than four hours of the near six-and-a-half-hour caution, enduring a mental and physical challenge that threatened to sap team momentum.

Reflecting on the relentless slow laps after the race, Zilisch shared honestly,

Probably the most miserable hours I’ve spent in a race car.

As the race reached its climax, Jack Aitken mounted a bold push to chase down the leading Penske-run car, but despite several attempts to seize the lead, the winning pass remained elusive. The Whelen squad, comprised of drivers with international credentials including Earl Bamber and Frederic Vesti, delivered a performance to be proud of given the circumstances. Yet, missing out on the top step at the famed Daytona International Speedway left Zilisch reflecting on what might have been.

Sharing gratitude for his teammates and the collective effort, Zilisch publicly stated,

P2 overall in the Rolex 24! Unfortunate to come up 1 spot short, but what a rollercoaster of a race to come back from. So proud of the entire Whelen Cadillac team for all of their efforts. A pleasure to be a part of this team with @jaitkenracer, @earlbamber, and @frederikvestiofficial. Onto the NASCAR season!

Building on Racing Success Despite Setbacks

Zilisch’s heartbreak this year comes just a season after his landmark LMP2 class win at Daytona as a 17-year-old, an achievement that had elevated expectations for his return. The team’s pace during the race proved they were legitimate contenders for an outright victory. Nevertheless, motorsport’s unpredictable nature, intensified by extreme weather and endurance racing’s unique demands, ultimately dashed their hopes during the late stages.

This near-miss isn’t Zilisch’s only close encounter with glory. Previously, he had come within reach of an Xfinity Series championship, racing for JR Motorsports, only for the playoff system to end his hopes at the final hurdle. Experiences like these have tested his resolve but also fueled his determination to break through on an even bigger stage.

NASCAR Ambitions Take Center Stage

Moving past the pain of Daytona, Zilisch now prepares for his first full Cup Series season with Trackhouse Racing, fully focused on building a lasting presence at the highest level of stock car racing. At just 19, he will make his rookie debut, driven by the belief that success in NASCAR’s elite ranks is within reach.

When asked about his racing future and whether he might pursue Formula One down the road, Zilisch was candid about where his interests lie, though he left room for possibilities.

That’s something I dreamed of as a kid,

he said at Daytona before elaborating on his approach and decision-making,

If I have a very successful first few years in NASCAR, it’s not something I wouldn’t say no to… I love what I’m doing in NASCAR as well. It’s so much fun to get to race on the biggest stage in America…I’m certainly excited and involved in everything I’m doing in the NASCAR world, and it’s got my attention at this time with 38 weekends. You never know, one day, if that opportunity comes about and I feel like I’ve done all I needed to do this side of the pond, I would definitely think about it.

– Connor Zilisch, driver

This balanced outlook highlights Zilisch’s appreciation for NASCAR’s challenges and opportunities, while also acknowledging the global draw of Formula One, particularly with the prospect of representing Cadillac should the opportunity arise.

A Path Shaped by Global and Domestic Racing

Zilisch’s success and versatility come from a deep background in a range of motorsport disciplines. Beginning his career in karting at the age of five, he swiftly made his mark by competing on international circuits, eventually earning distinction as the first American to win the CIK-FIA Karting Academy Trophy. Competing and winning in Europe established his credentials well before arriving on the American racing scene, giving him a perspective rare among his peers.

The North Carolina native’s path to the Cup Series has included stints in open-wheel and sports car racing, making him one of the most recognized young talents rising through the American ranks. His balanced approach, forged on both sides of the Atlantic and across disciplines, shapes his determination to excel in NASCAR and potentially collect the points he needs for an F1 Super License, should the opportunity materialize in the future.

The loss of the Xfinity title delayed his ability to earn the FIA points required, but Zilisch now turns to the rigorous Cup Series, aiming to make up ground and compete for motorsport’s ultimate credentials.

Eyes on the Future as NASCAR Season Begins

Connor Zilisch enters the upcoming NASCAR Cup Series full of passion, keen to convert the pain of recent near-misses into hard-won success. Racing with Trackhouse Racing, he carries both youthful confidence and a track record that spans international championships, endurance racing, and open-wheel starts. While the memory of Daytona lingers, Zilisch’s focus is now firmly set on excelling in NASCAR’s most competitive field.

For Zilisch—and for fans watching closely—his next test comes with the green flag of the new season. Each lap offers not just redemption from heartbreak but another step towards long-held dreams, whether in America’s premier stock car battle or, perhaps, a future shot as a Cadillac driver in Formula One. With his relentless effort and ability to learn from adversity, Connor Zilisch’s story is one of rising from disappointment and aiming higher, keeping motorsport’s global legacy in his sights.
