JR Motorsports Overview

JR Motorsports is an American professional stock car racing team based in Mooresville, North Carolina. The team was founded in 2005 and is co-owned by Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kelley Earnhardt Miller, Rick Hendrick, and L. W. Miller. Pronounced “Junior Motorsports,” the organization fields Chevrolet race cars across multiple NASCAR series and is widely recognized for developing young racing talent into championship-caliber drivers.

The team competes primarily in the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series, where it has earned four Drivers’ Championships, and has also fielded entries in the NASCAR Cup Series, Camping World Truck Series, ARCA Menards Series, CARS Late Model Stock Tour, and the eNASCAR Coca-Cola iRacing Series. Operating from a 66,000-square-foot race shop near Mooresville, JR Motorsports fields the No. 1, No. 5, No. 7, No. 8, No. 9, No. 40, and No. 88 cars, supported by sponsors including Traveller Whiskey, OneMain Financial, BRANDT, Menards, GoDaddy, Pilot Flying J, Unilever, and NAPA Auto Parts.

Founding and Organizational Origins

JR Motorsports began in 1998 as the marketing division of Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s race team. The business started in a shed on the property of Dale Earnhardt, Inc. with a single employee. In 2002, Earnhardt Jr. converted the operation into a racing team when T. J. Majors drove in the street stock division at Concord Speedway in North Carolina. This transition marked the beginning of Earnhardt Jr.’s venture into team ownership and driver development.

The team’s first victory came at Motor Mile Speedway in Radford, Virginia, in 2004, at a time when Earnhardt Jr. was also co-owner of another racing venture, Chance 2 Motorsports. United States Navy sponsorship funded JR Motorsports in its current form, which began competing in the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series in 2006, accelerating the team’s original 2007 launch timeline. Following Earnhardt Jr.’s signing with Hendrick Motorsports, the Hendrick and JR Motorsports Nationwide Series operations were merged.

Growth Into O’Reilly Auto Parts Competition

By 2008, JR Motorsports expanded its presence in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, now the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series, with multiple full-time entries. The team’s No. 5 car debuted that year following the Hendrick Motorsports merger and was driven by drivers including Jimmie Johnson, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Martin Truex Jr., Mark Martin, Landon Cassill, and Ron Fellows. The No. 5 secured two wins in 2008, including Mark Martin’s victory at Las Vegas and Ron Fellows’ win in Montreal, the first NASCAR race run in the rain.

The organization broadened its technical and commercial partnerships over the following years, with sponsors such as Lowe’s, National Guard, Delphi, GoDaddy, and Unilever backing the team. In early 2019, JR Motorsports established a driver development program called Drivers Edge Development in partnership with GMS Racing, which trained young drivers through the team’s late model and O’Reilly Auto Parts Series programs. The inaugural class included Noah Gragson, John Hunter Nemechek, Zane Smith, Sheldon Creed, Sam Mayer, and Adam Lemke, with Carson Hocevar joining later that year. The program concluded in 2023 when GMS Racing ceased operations.

JR Motorsports Competitive Journey

Since its founding, JR Motorsports has steadily grown from a single-car late model operation into a multi-series Chevrolet team with more than 700 combined race starts. The team has won four O’Reilly Auto Parts Series Drivers’ Championships, accumulated 119 total race victories across national series, and earned 57 pole positions. JR Motorsports has also expanded into the Cup Series with a part-time entry and remains one of the most respected driver development organizations in NASCAR.

Early Seasons and Development (2005–2013)

The No. 88 car debuted in 2005 at the Ford 300 with Mark McFarland driving, sponsored by the United States Navy. McFarland was later replaced mid-season by Shane Huffman, and the team experienced early turnover as it developed its competitive foundation. Brad Keselowski joined the No. 88 in 2008, winning his first race at Nashville Superspeedway and adding another victory at Bristol Motor Speedway while finishing third in points. Keselowski continued his success in 2009, winning four races before departing for Penske Racing.

Throughout the early 2010s, JR Motorsports continued rotating drivers through the No. 5, No. 7, and No. 88 entries. The No. 7 car hosted Danica Patrick in 2010 and 2012, while the No. 88 welcomed drivers including Aric Almirola, Cole Whitt, and Kevin Harvick. Regan Smith joined the No. 7 in 2013, winning twice at Talladega and Michigan and finishing third in points. The 2014 season began with Smith’s win in the DRIVE4COPD 300 at Daytona, setting the stage for a transformative year.

Breakthrough in O’Reilly Auto Parts Series (2014–2024)

JR Motorsports’ first major breakthrough came in 2014, when eighteen-year-old Chase Elliott drove the No. 9 car to three victories and became the first rookie to win a NASCAR national series championship. Elliott’s success established JR Motorsports as a premier destination for young talent. William Byron then won the 2017 championship in the No. 9, taking four wins including the season finale at Homestead, while Tyler Reddick claimed the 2018 title with a dramatic victory at the Ford EcoBoost 300, beating Elliott Sadler in a margin-of-victory of 0.0004 seconds, the closest finish in NASCAR history.

Justin Allgaier emerged as a central figure for the team in the No. 7 car. After finishing third in points in both 2016 and 2017, Allgaier won five races in 2018 and captured the regular-season championship. In 2019, he won at Phoenix to reach the Championship 4 for the third time in four years, and in 2020 he won three races and finished second in points. Allgaier continued his strong form with multiple wins in 2021 and 2022, before winning at Charlotte in 2023 to advance to another Championship 4.

In 2024, Allgaier dominated at Darlington by sweeping both stages and the race, added a second win at Michigan, and earned a spot in the Championship 4 for the fourth time. He finished second at Phoenix to claim his first O’Reilly Auto Parts Series championship, the fourth title in team history. Sam Mayer also contributed key wins for the No. 1 car during this era, including victories at Road America, Watkins Glen, the Charlotte Roval, Homestead, Texas, Iowa, and the Charlotte Roval in 2024. Noah Gragson added to the team’s success with multiple wins across the 2020, 2021, and 2022 seasons, including four consecutive victories in 2022, a streak not seen since Sam Ard in 1983.

Modern Program and Current Direction (2024–Present)

Following Allgaier’s 2024 championship, JR Motorsports entered a new era in 2025 with Carson Kvapil taking over the No. 1 car and Sammy Smith continuing in the No. 8. The team debuted its part-time Cup Series program at the 2025 Daytona 500 with the No. 40 Chevrolet, driven by Justin Allgaier and sponsored by Traveller Whiskey in collaboration with country music artist Chris Stapleton. Allgaier finished ninth in the race, the top open car in the field, and the team announced a return for the 2026 Daytona 500. JR Motorsports also fielded the No. 9 part-time in 2025 with drivers including Ross Chastain, Daniel Suárez, Shane van Gisbergen, and Connor Mosack, earning victories at Mexico City with Suárez and at the Chicago street course with van Gisbergen.

In 2026, the team continues its multi-car effort with Justin Allgaier in the No. 7, Carson Kvapil and Connor Zilisch sharing the No. 1 with Rodney Childers as crew chief, Sammy Smith in the No. 8, and Rajah Caruth part-time in the No. 88 alongside Hendrick Motorsports drivers including William Byron, Kyle Larson, Alex Bowman, and Chase Elliott. The team has opened the 2026 season with wins at Phoenix, Darlington, Martinsville, Nashville, and Pocono, reinforcing its continued championship ambitions.

Philosophy and Competitive Strengths

JR Motorsports is built around a clear driver development philosophy, taking young and underfunded talent and turning them into race winners and champions. The team’s strengths lie in road course and intermediate track performance, with strategic aggression on late-race restarts and deep experience in crew chief pairings. The organization consistently fields well-prepared Chevrolet Camaros across its various entries, emphasizing steady weekly performance and playoff execution.

Key Milestones and Major Moments

Among the most significant milestones in team history are Chase Elliott’s 2014 championship, William Byron’s 2017 title, Tyler Reddick’s 2018 championship, and Justin Allgaier’s 2024 title. The team recorded its first Cup Series start in 2025 at the Daytona 500, and its drivers have produced some of the closest finishes in NASCAR history, including Reddick’s 0.0004-second victory at the 2018 Daytona opener. The team’s streak of four straight wins with Noah Gragson in 2022 echoed a NASCAR national series mark last set by Sam Ard in 1983.

JR Motorsports Achievements and Results

JR Motorsports has compiled a strong record across multiple NASCAR series, highlighted by four O’Reilly Auto Parts Series Drivers’ Championships and 119 total race victories. The team’s success spans the Cup Series, O’Reilly Auto Parts Series, Camping World Truck Series, and ARCA Menards Series, with consistent playoff appearances and a strong record of developing championship-caliber drivers.

O’Reilly Auto Parts Series Achievements

JR Motorsports has won four O’Reilly Auto Parts Series Drivers’ Championships, earned in 2014, 2017, 2018, and 2024. The team has accumulated 116 victories and 52 pole positions in the series. Justin Allgaier headlines the team’s success with multiple race wins, including key victories at Darlington, Michigan, Charlotte, and Martinsville, and the 2024 championship. Other championship drivers include Chase Elliott, William Byron, and Tyler Reddick, all of whom won series titles with the team before advancing to the Cup Series.

Conference Achievements

JR Motorsports operates as a single-car and multi-car team in the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series rather than a conference-based structure, so the organization does not compete for separate conference titles. The team’s conference-level success is reflected in its four series championships, multiple Championship 4 appearances, and consistent playoff qualification across multiple entries each season.

Divisional Achievements

JR Motorsports has not competed in a divisional structure within the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series, instead running its cars as a unified team. Its divisional-level results are measured by manufacturer performance with Chevrolet, where the team has been a consistent contributor to Chevrolet’s national series success. The team’s late model program has also captured track championships, including Josh Berry’s 2012 Motor Mile Speedway title and Carson Kvapil’s back-to-back CARS Tour championships in 2022 and 2023.

Series Achievements

Across all series, JR Motorsports has logged 736 race starts, 119 victories, and 57 pole positions. The team has won two Camping World Truck Series races with the No. 00 entry, both in 2015, with Kasey Kahne at Charlotte and Cole Custer at Gateway. The organization has also recorded one ARCA Menards Series win, with Cole Custer at Pocono in 2015. The 2025 Cup Series debut at the Daytona 500 added a new chapter to the team’s national series presence.
