Richard Childress’s Journey from Modest Beginnings to Racing Success
Born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Richard Childress’s early life was marked by deep personal loss, losing his father at only five years old. Persistence and a resolute work ethic defined his childhood, from working for his school lunch by cleaning and sweeping halls in first grade to selling peanuts and popcorn at the local stadium. These formative experiences instilled in Childress the values that would later propel him to success on and off the racetrack.
Childress’s fascination with car racing began early. His childhood dream was to become a racecar driver, a vision he pursued by purchasing a used taxicab for $20 and transforming it into his first racing vehicle. Over the decades, the one-man venture evolved into Richard Childress Racing, recognized nationally for its achievements in motorsports. Today, the team employs more than 400 people and competes in the NASCAR Cup Series and NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series—a testament to Childress’s leadership and determination.

Richard Childress Racing, founded and led by Childress, stands as one of the leading organizations in American motorsports. The team has secured over 200 victories across NASCAR’s three major national series, boasting 17 championships, three Daytona 500 triumphs, and three Brickyard 400 victories. Childress’s remarkable accomplishments led to his induction into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2017, reinforcing the significance of Richard Childress Racing achievements within the sport’s history.

In 2008, they partnered with Wake-Forest University Baptist Medical Center to establish the Childress Institute for Pediatric Trauma, a nationwide effort to prevent traumatic injuries—recognized as the leading cause of death among children in America. The Institute funds research, education, and advocacy, enhancing care and treatment for injured children across the United States.
