An Unconventional Journey into NASCAR
Unlike many in the sport, Mills arrived at NASCAR from a unique starting point. Beginning his journey as a football walk-on at Arizona State University, Mills was not initially a motorsports enthusiast and had little involvement in racing during his early years. His career pivoted after a strength coach noticed his strength, precision, and discipline, encouraging him to pursue opportunities as part of a NASCAR pit crew.
Establishing a Reputation on Pit Road
Over more than ten years in NASCAR, Mills went from newcomer to established leader, working with some of the most skilled competitors in the sport. As the current jackman for LEGACY MOTOR CLUB’s renowned No. 43 team, he holds a critical spot—the jackman is the first crew member to handle the car on pit road, a trusted and demanding responsibility in motorsports.
The importance of pit crew roles in NASCAR cannot be overstated; split-second decisions can determine the outcome of a race. Mills has likened the jackman position to a combination of powerlifting and ballroom dancing, highlighting the challenge of blending explosive force with precise movement, all executed with accuracy and finesse under pressure.

The award ceremony took place during LEGACY MOTOR CLUB’s 2026 season kickoff at the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte on January 28. Jimmie Johnson called Mills to the stage and presented him with a signature Richard Petty Charlie One Horse hat, marking a symbolic presentation for this new honor. Mills was visibly moved during the occasion, noting the weight of receiving such an award in front of his team and referencing the value of mentorship and opportunity at LEGACY MOTOR CLUB.

said Mills when he was awarded the honor at LEGACY MOTOR CLUB’s 2026 season kickoff meeting at the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte on Jan. 28.
“Knowing Richard Petty now and seeing all he accomplished – I have a lot to live up to. It’s cool sitting here and seeing everyone at the team (right in front of me). As an individual, you are faced with a lot of decisions in your career – but from the first moment I sat down with Chris (Hall, Director of Pit Crew Operations) to talk about joining LEGACY, it was clear that there would be a lot of opportunities for me here. It’s easy to invest in something when you see there’s going to be return on it.”
