Ryan Blaney Reflects on Wild NASCAR Clash Performance

Ryan Blaney, representing Team Penske, spoke to Racer following his unpredictable run at the Cook Out Clash, which took place at Bowman Gray Stadium on February 4, 2026. Blaney’s NASCAR Clash performance stood out amid challenging weather conditions and a dramatic sequence of events that ultimately saw him secure a podium finish, despite a series of setbacks during the 200-lap main event.

Blaney began the race from 16th position after a modest qualifying session with his #12 Ford Mustang. He quickly found his rhythm on the short track, skillfully advancing to fourth place in the early laps. The Penske driver was optimistic about his vehicle’s setup and his prospects through the initial green-flag run. Rain, however, became a major factor and altered the stage for all teams.

As precipitation hit the track, NASCAR officials mandated a switch to wet-weather tires, shaking up strategies across the field. Blaney, who had shown strong pace in dry conditions, struggled to maintain control and adjust his driving style in the wet. The slick conditions led to a collision as he tangled with already spun cars, leaving his Ford Mustang with significant damage. Despite these difficulties, he pressed on and ultimately finished third, demonstrating determination and resilience under changing circumstances.

Reflecting on the race, Blaney recounted the unexpected challenges and his initial confidence in the car’s performance:

“It was just a crazy, odd race. I thought we were by far the best car in the first run of the race; come from 16th to fourth, and just not really pushing the issue. I felt really good about our car. I just wanted to kind of get some good track position for the second stage, and then it rained at the break.”

He went on to describe his concern once rain tires were bolted on and his struggle to adapt to rapidly changing conditions:

“I was a little nervous when we put rain tires on and you can’t do adjustments because I’m like, ‘What my car does really good in the dry will be awful in the wet.’ And that’s what it did. I went straight to the back and was just in the way,” he added.

RFK Racing’s Ryan Preece emerged victorious to claim his first-ever Cup Series win, with William Byron and Ryan Blaney rounding out the top three at Bowman Gray. Amid the unpredictability, Blaney’s podium finish solidified his status as a consistent performer in high-pressure situations.

Facing Superstitions and Breaking Barriers with the “Cursed” Paint Scheme

Beyond this year’s Clash, Ryan Blaney’s career has featured memorable milestones, including overcoming superstitions tied to certain car designs. One standout moment came during the 2025 season when Blaney scored his second win of the year at the Coke Zero Sugar 400, held at Daytona International Speedway. Celebrating this victory, Blaney departed from his usual routine and performed donuts in his black Advance Auto Parts Ford Mustang Dark Horse, a car he had previously associated with misfortune at speedways.

The Team Penske driver rarely chooses elaborate celebrations, usually skipping donuts and burnouts. However, this time, he felt the moment called for a break from tradition, as he achieved his maiden win in what had been considered an unlucky paint scheme for him personally. Blaney candidly recalled the event and shared his thoughts with the press:

“Also, I mainly did it for Advance Auto Parts because that paint scheme at speedways has been cursed. I’ve gotten right hooked with that scheme more times than I can count. The CEO, Shane (O’Kelly), told me, ‘I think we’ve paid our dues with that paint scheme at speedways.'”

Blaney’s campaign also saw new streaks begin and old ones end, as Hendrick Motorsports driver William Byron took the win at Martinsville Speedway, snapping Blaney’s run of consecutive fall victories at that venue. Concluding the 2025 season, Blaney’s consistent performance netted him four wins and 15 top-five finishes, ultimately placing him sixth in the overall standings.

What Lies Ahead for Blaney After a Tumultuous Clash

Ryan Blaney’s ability to adapt and contend despite obstacles at the NASCAR Clash highlights both his skill and the unpredictability that marks the Cup Series. His podium at Bowman Gray, paired with his continued break from superstition and strong 2025 season performance, reinforces his reputation as a determined and resourceful competitor. As teams now shift focus to the upcoming races and the intensity of another demanding season, Blaney’s resilience will be pivotal for Team Penske, and fans will be watching closely for his next moves on the national stage.
