Ben Rhodes’ Dramatic NASCAR Comeback After Costly Fuel Error

Ben Rhodes delivered a remarkable display in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series at EchoPark Speedway in Hampton, Georgia on Saturday, bouncing back from an unexpected fuel mishap to secure a fourth-place finish. The Ben Rhodes NASCAR comeback was marked by emotional highs and lows, with his ThorSport Racing team contending with both strategic missteps and late-race determination.

Early Dominance Disrupted by Unforeseen Fuel Shortfall

Rhodes, piloting the No. 99 ThorSport Racing Ford, spent much of the race at the front, leading for a race-best 70 laps. However, as the competition neared the end of its second stage, Rhodes’ car unexpectedly ran out of fuel while entering Turn 1—an error that momentarily dashed hopes for a win. The incident was partly attributed to extra pace laps required due to earlier rain at the 1.54-mile track, which altered fuel calculations and threw off the usual pit stop rhythm, according to crew chief Vance “Bud” Haefele.

Haefele explained their miscalculation, saying,

“We just missed it by one lap,”

and further added,

“We didn’t account for enough when they rode around at the beginning of the race under the five or six laps. We missed it by a lap.”

Retracing the Steps Leading to the Setback

Early in the event, Rhodes benefited from a two-tire pit stop at the conclusion of Stage 1, which kept him on track for a shorter period compared to other front-runners. While others managed to complete the run to Lap 80 without issue, his aggressive strategy, coupled with the unexpected fuel demands, proved costly. As Rhodes himself recounted,

“When you have two tires, and you run all those laps, I guess there was just a miscalculation on fuel. I was ready to fight, though,”

he said, adding,

“Can’t fight your own team, but I was ready to fight.”

This fuel miscalculation forced Rhodes out of the leading pack, causing him to tumble to 19th after losing a lap. Yet, showing notable resilience, Rhodes capitalized on a caution at Lap 101, which let him regain his position on the lead lap through the free pass rule.

Fighting Back into Contention

With urgency mounting in the race’s final stages, Rhodes returned to the track with new tires, determined to recover lost ground. He launched a relentless charge, advancing from 19th on the final restart at Lap 107 to join the front-runners by the checkered flag at Lap 126. Reflecting on his drive, Rhodes recounted,

“Well, we had some new tires on the truck and a lot of anger behind the wheel after we ran out of fuel,”

Facing an ill-handling truck but refusing to concede, Rhodes executed aggressive maneuvers and gained positions rapidly, much to the admiration of his ThorSport Racing crew. Afterward, he praised the team effort, saying,

“I think it speaks volumes of the team, especially here where you have no practice,”

and continued,

“The speed is made at the race shop, right? So we showed up, we had great speed. Kudos to the guys. But man, not getting the stage points really sucks. That’s the name of the game right now because the points are changed. Because it’s all about attrition. It’s all about consistency. So I was really hoping to be in the top five in points after Stage 2.”

Rhodes’ Comeback Solidifies Strong Points Standings

Despite missing out on valuable stage points due to the fuel issue—impacting his points tally under the series’ current rules—Rhodes’ determined performance ensured he still achieved his broader target. By race’s end, Rhodes departed Georgia in third place in the overall Craftsman Truck Series standings, trailing Chandler Smith by 35 points. The entire ThorSport Racing crew, led by Haefele, attributed the team’s impressive recovery to Rhodes himself, with Haefele simply stating,

“Ben Rhodes, That’s all you can say.”

—Vance “Bud” Haefele, Crew Chief

Rhodes’ effort at EchoPark Speedway is bound to be remembered for both the adversity he faced and the determination that defined his comeback, reaffirming his status as a fierce competitor in a challenging and unpredictable NASCAR season. With the series continuing to demand consistency and adaptability, the Ben Rhodes NASCAR comeback serves as a testament to the resilience and teamwork at ThorSport Racing as they chase the championship in the races ahead.
