Denny Hamlin’s 23XI Racing Takes NASCAR by Storm

Denny Hamlin 23XI Racing leadership has set a new benchmark in NASCAR, quickly transforming from a startup into a powerhouse, thanks to a dynamic partnership with Michael Jordan. In just a few years, the 23XI Racing team has not only secured marquee victories but also established a culture and vision that have rapidly elevated its status within the sport.

A Vision Set in Motion by Hamlin and Jordan

Inside Airspeed, the expansive headquarters for 23XI Racing in Huntersville, North Carolina, a bold vision fuels the organization. A sign prominently displayed in the facility encapsulates their mission

“To be the world’s most recognizable motorsports team, winning on and off the track, moving forward together, and setting the standard for excellence,”

reminding every employee of the high standards set by Denny Hamlin and Michael Jordan.

As the new season began, speculation surrounding the team’s resilience following December’s antitrust litigation against NASCAR vanished. Tyler Reddick clinched both the season’s opening Daytona 500 and the subsequent Atlanta race. Simultaneously, Bubba Wallace delivered commanding performances, leading a significant portion of laps across both events. This impressive run has placed Reddick and Wallace atop the Cup Series leaderboard, ranked first and second, respectively, as they prepare for the upcoming Circuit of the Americas race in Texas.

The triumphs have created an energizing atmosphere at Airspeed, where unique personal touches—like an artful array of 45 Air Jordan sneakers forming the number 23—underscore the team’s stylish work environment.

“All we’ve been doing since the season started is eating, drinking and celebrating,”

said Steve Lauletta, 23XI President, addressing the team as they commemorated Reddick’s Daytona 500 victory with over 100 employees sharing in the celebration.

Creating a Winning Culture Through Leadership

Michael Jordan, a renowned Pro Basketball Hall of Famer, and Denny Hamlin, himself a three-time Daytona 500 champion, have fostered an environment that has quickly become a magnet for talents across NASCAR. At Airspeed, celebrations of victories include pizza parties and company-wide luncheons, culminating with an evening toast featuring Jordan’s own Cincoro Tequila.

Employee benefits at 23XI extend well beyond the norm: team members receive preloaded vending machine cards, enjoy a cutting-edge gym and wellness center that rivals those of established franchises, and everyone wears custom pairs of Jordan’s iconic sneakers—including the pit crews, who debuted a bespoke shoe at the Daytona 500.

“There’s no question that we’re building fast cars and cars that are capable of winning week in, week out. We don’t always hit the setup or things like that, but we’re working hard,”

said Hamlin.

“This team being nonexistent six years ago is just amazing that we’re able to do what we did with building this thing from scratch and now having the results week in, week out that is contending with the big guys.”

Founded in 2020 and launched in 2021, 23XI Racing has already joined the ranks of elite NASCAR teams such as Hendrick Motorsports, Joe Gibbs Racing, and Team Penske—an extraordinary rise in a short period of time.

Resilience Amid Legal and Competitive Challenges

23XI Racing’s rapid ascent came despite significant hurdles, particularly a lengthy legal dispute concerning revenue sharing with NASCAR. The two-year case, spearheaded by Jordan, injected uncertainty into the team’s future, causing anxiety among employees who feared a negative outcome could jeopardize their jobs. Throughout the 2023 season, the team pushed forward unchartered, notching just one victory—Bubba Wallace’s Brickyard 400 win at Indianapolis Motor Speedway—even as tensions swirled behind the scenes.

Ultimately, the case resolved favorably for 23XI and their co-plaintiffs, Front Row Motorsports, with NASCAR settling on the ninth day of trial. A vital factor in maintaining staff morale through this stressful period was Jordan and Hamlin’s commitment to their team: they guaranteed salaries for all employees through 2026, no matter the lawsuit’s result. This unwavering assurance enabled everyone to stay focused and continue striving.

“The guys worked hard all summer. I know we had our little ordeal, but they never gave up,”

shared Jordan following the Atlanta win.

“They kept working hard, and this is the fruit of their labor. You know, they put forth the effort, and for us to come out and win the first two races says a lot about our whole team.”

Pushing Boundaries in Branding and Community

With its sights set on industry leadership, 23XI Racing has adopted innovative approaches in both marketing and engagement. Leveraging Jordan’s iconic brand, the team created collaborations such as a partnership with San Diego State University’s basketball program. On the eve of the Daytona 500, the partnership took center stage when 23XI’s drivers sent messages for fans, and branded rally towels were distributed at a major university game.

Race-day festivities extended beyond the track, with 23XI and Toyota hosting a lively watch party on Coronado Island, a location that will see NASCAR action later in the year.

“We want people to go ‘That’s my team!’”

emphasized Lauletta.

“We had our partners there giving away prizes and then we won the race. That’s the stuff that helps differentiate us and helps these casual sports fan who know who Michael is now know who our team is. We won the race and the place went wild.”

The team continues to make memorable statements on and off the track. In Las Vegas, Tyler Reddick’s car will soon pay tribute to Kurt Busch’s 2022 victory and his new placement in the NASCAR Hall of Fame, sporting the Jumpman logo along with a distinctive Air Jordan III-inspired design.

This flair and innovation have distinguished 23XI among both NASCAR’s dedicated fans and a new, broader audience. The passion that Michael Jordan brings to his role is evident throughout the organization.

“His passion for this sport is just unreal and it’s so fun to be around,”

Lauletta remarked.

“In getting 23XI going, the most pleasantly surprising thing is his love for the sport. It is as genuine as genuine gets. And knowing now that we are in this for a very long time, it makes us all realize the potential for this team is limitless. This is his competitive outlet now and he’s all-in.”

The Road Ahead for 23XI and NASCAR

With strong leadership from Denny Hamlin and Michael Jordan, a vibrant and supportive team culture, and fresh marketing strategies, 23XI Racing has quickly established itself as a major contender in NASCAR. Their focus on employee well-being, continual pursuit of excellence, and commitment to innovation signal that their rise is far from over. As they prepare for more races and celebrate their recent achievements, 23XI is influencing not only results on the scoreboard but also the culture and future direction of the sport itself.
