22-Year NASCAR Cup Series Vet Out After Atlanta DNF

Longtime driver J.J. Yeley will not be competing at the Circuit of the Americas after NY Racing Team’s No. 44 Chevrolet failed to finish at EchoPark Speedway, marking a pivotal shift in this season’s NASCAR Cup Series news. The team currently has no confirmed races planned following their Atlanta setback, casting uncertainty over their 2026 participation.

NY Racing Team’s Season Start and Atlanta Challenges

NY Racing Team’s season began with a disappointing note, as they missed qualifying for the Dayona 500 at Daytona International Speedway for the third year running, with Yeley again piloting the No. 44 car. This setback did not stop their return to competition at the newly renamed EchoPark Speedway in Hampton, Georgia.

The race in Atlanta was particularly grueling, characteristic of superspeedway events. Attrition was high with 28 out of the 38 cars involved in incidents during the overtime event. J.J. Yeley had managed to avoid trouble initially, but as the laps wound down, he too became one of the race’s many casualties. Already multiple laps behind the leaders, Yeley’s day ended early with a 31st-place finish and a DNF, ending his effort to solidify the start of his 22nd Cup Series season.

Shifting Schedules and No Immediate Plans for No. 44

The NY Racing Team appears to be following a flexible, week-to-week strategy as they have in previous seasons, resulting in an unpredictable part-time schedule for the No. 44 entry. As of now, there are no set plans for Yeley or the team to return for upcoming NASCAR Cup Series events this year, though future races remain a possibility as the season progresses.

Neither the No. 44 car nor the other open car from Atlanta, Live Fast Motorsports’ No. 78 Chevrolet driven by B.J. McLeod, will be competing at the Circuit of the Americas. The entry list for this weekend’s DuraMAX Grand Prix at the Austin, Texas road course features only one open car: the No. 33 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet. This vehicle, yet to debut this season, will be driven by Jesse Love, the reigning O’Reilly Auto Parts Series champion, who is set to make his Cup Series road course debut.
