Brent Crews Shines in Top-10 O’Reilly Series Debut at COTA

Brent Crews made a striking entrance in his O’Reilly Auto Parts Series debut on Saturday at Circuit of The Americas, demonstrating composure and speed as he finished sixth in his first outing. The 17-year-old rookie, driving for Joe Gibbs Racing, capitalized on his long-awaited opportunity by leading laps and keeping his car clean in a demanding race under the Austin, Texas, sun—making his Brent Crews O’Reilly Series debut one to remember.

Crews Showcases Skill at Circuit of The Americas

The anticipation was high for Crews, part of the Toyota Racing development camp, as he finally made his first start after missing earlier events at Daytona and EchoPark Speedway due to age restrictions. Despite those earlier absences, Crews quickly adjusted to the intensity of the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series and demonstrated strong racecraft, maintaining control of his No. 19 car through a chaotic field.

Reflecting on his performance, Crews shared,

“I feel like today was just a big learning day,”

Brent Crews, rookie, said post-race. As the race unfolded, he focused on survival and keeping his car out of trouble, stating,

“My first start, obviously. Just overall, I wanted to finish and keep the car in one piece, and we did that. There was some things I feel like I could have done better there at the end. I’ve been here so many times where you gain a row or or two rows taking the outside and then they all get wiped out. It was a tough day. It was a long, hot day, and we survived.”

Aggressive Moves and Racing Against Elite Competitors

The second stage of the race marked a breakout moment for Crews. On a crucial restart, he boldly went four-wide climbing into Turn 1 to overtake established road-course racers like Shane van Gisbergen and Connor Zilisch, seizing the lead. His time at the front lasted for five laps, earning the respect of rivals—including van Gisbergen, who eventually took the victory.

Impressed with the rookie’s performance, van Gisbergen commented,

“He was driving like crazy. I couldn’t drive like that. I’d be worn out in two laps. He was just crazy on the limit and it was really cool to watch. He looks like he’s an amazing talent and I’m sure he’ll be really good in not much time. It’s fun to race him, but kind of knew it was not gonna last long [battling for the lead].”

Shane van Gisbergen, New Zealander and race winner, said.

Limited Schedule Ahead for the Rising Star

Crews, who will not turn 18 until the end of March, faces a restricted race calendar due to age eligibility. He will sit out two of the next three O’Reilly events—specifically at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and Darlington Raceway—but is set to compete again next Saturday when the series visits Phoenix Raceway under the lights. Fans can follow the action through The CW, MRN Radio, and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. Although not eligible for a full campaign, Crews’ goal in the series is clear: maximize every appearance and continue learning at the top level of stock car racing.

A Rookie’s Outlook and Season Ambitions

Despite not focusing on championship points, Crews aims to make each start count and was satisfied to cap off his COTA debut by staying out of trouble and gaining essential experience. Regarding his rookie challenge, Crews noted,

“It was a lot, right? I’m a rookie, and as a rookie here, you’re at everybody else’s fate,”

Brent Crews, rookie, said. He elaborated on his approach to race strategy, saying,

“Just trying to make good decisions there at the end and not put myself in a position to get crashed or run into a crash. It was a lot of fun. This is something I’ve been looking forward to for the past 10 years and it was everything I’ve expected, and more. Everybody’s really aggressive and really good. The cars are really close and just excited to be right where I am.”

Impact of Crews’ Debut on the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series

With his poised debut performance, Brent Crews has established himself as a young talent to watch in the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series. Competing on one of America’s most technical road courses and running with respected competitors like Shane van Gisbergen and Connor Zilisch., Crews’ fearless approach and composure caught the attention of the paddock. As the series moves forward, his continued development with Joe Gibbs Racing and Toyota Racing will be eagerly anticipated, and fans can expect more electrifying moments as Crews grows into his role in top-level stock car racing.
