Connor Zilisch Snags NASCAR Pole at COTA in Thrilling Qualifier

Connor Zilisch captured the pole position for the Focused Health 250 at Circuit of The Americas (COTA) during Friday’s intense qualifying, launching his double-duty NASCAR weekend on a high note. His achievement, a standout moment for both JR Motorsports and his own career, puts the spotlight on the rising rookie and the energy surrounding the NASCAR event in Texas.

Zilisch Dominates Qualifying in Austin

Competing with JR Motorsports in the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series, Connor Zilisch clocked a fast lap of 97.740 seconds (88.398 mph) on COTA’s demanding 17-turn, 2.4-mile National Course. This quick run secured the team’s pole for the second consecutive year, barely edging past Trackhouse Racing teammate Shane van Gisbergen by just over two-tenths of a second. Both Zilisch and van Gisbergen, typically Cup Series contenders, joined the O’Reilly grid for the Texas event, heightening competition in the series and showcasing the depth of talent at JR Motorsports.

Shane van Gisbergen, after his effort, shared his thoughts on the qualifying session:

“It’s fun to be back in these cars. Thanks to JR Motorsports for having me and Safety Culture. It’s really fun,”

van Gisbergen said. He continued,

“They just move around so much. It’s really cool. My lap was good, but that little bugger is pretty quick. Hopefully we race him tomorrow. My long-run speed was good in the race runs we did in practice. Who knows? Up the front is a good place to start.”

Trouble in Practice, Triumph in Qualifying

Earlier on Friday, Zilisch faced adversity when a tire puncture slowed him in practice. Despite ranking ninth fastest, he and the #1 crew, including seasoned crew chief Rodney Childers, quickly made front-end adjustments to prevent a repeat issue. Zilisch commented on the rapid turnaround:

“We had a bit of an issue in practice and cut a tire down,”

Zilisch explained. He further added,

“We made some adjustments on the front end to not do that again. The entire #1 crew—it’s great being with Rodney [Childers], having his experience, and everyone here in this JR Motorsports team. It’s been a lot of fun getting back with these guys in the O’Reilly car. I love coming back and racing these cars; they’re a ton of fun. We’ve got a fast Chevrolet for tomorrow. Looking forward to it. Busy weekend for me, but great way to start it.”

JR Motorsports Leads the Field

Zilisch’s pole win marks his first of the season and the 10th in his racing career, placing him at the front of a competitive 38-car lineup for Saturday’s 65-lap feature at COTA. The race, set for 2 p.m. CT and broadcast on CW, PRN, and SiriusXM, promises high drama with top talent battling for supremacy on the Texas road course.

JR Motorsports demonstrated their strength by placing three drivers in the top five and securing four of the top ten qualifying spots. Justin Allgaier took fifth with a 98.562-second lap (87.661 mph), while Sammy Smith earned a spot in the top ten at 98.863 seconds (87.394 mph). Their consistent performance solidifies the team’s reputation as a powerhouse in the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series.

Other Top Qualifiers and Competitive Outlook

The JR Motorsports sweep of the front grid was interrupted by Austin Hill from Richard Childress Racing, who claimed third with a 98.359-second lap (87.841 mph). Brandon Jones of Joe Gibbs Racing followed closely in fourth, posting his season-best qualifying effort at 98.448 seconds (87.762 mph). Hill, recognized as the winner of the Daytona season opener, adds another layer of competition to the weekend narrative, alongside standout drivers like Allgaier and Smith.

Implications for the Upcoming Race

With Connor Zilisch setting the pace and big names like Shane van Gisbergen, Austin Hill, and Brandon Jones close behind, Saturday’s race at Circuit of The Americas is primed for tight battles and potential surprises. The event also highlights the impact of teams such as JR Motorsports, Trackhouse Racing, Richard Childress Racing, and Joe Gibbs Racing on the NASCAR landscape. As Zilisch aims to capitalize on his pole position and busy weekend, fans and teams anticipate a high-energy showdown fueled by passion and strong qualifying momentum.
