Alex Bowman Exits NASCAR COTA Race Midway Due to Illness

At the Circuit of the Americas race in Austin, Texas, Alex Bowman withdrew from the NASCAR Cup Series competition due to illness during the later part of the event. Myatt Snyder, a part-time driver, stepped in for Bowman for the remainder of the race, allowing Bowman’s entry to stay in contention for points, a crucial move given his recent standings in NASCAR.

Bowman Leaves Race on Lap 73

Bowman began the Sunday race from the 16th position and posted a solid seventh-place finish in the opening stage. However, his performance dropped in the second stage, where he finished 34th. While running near the back of the pack late in the race, Bowman exited to the garage at lap 73 out of the total 95 laps, prompting a change behind the wheel.

Myatt Snyder Takes Over

Myatt Snyder made his NASCAR Cup Series debut as Bowman’s substitute. Previously, Snyder competed part-time in the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series and last participated full-time in 2022 with Jordan Anderson Racing. Notably, he had earned a sixth-place result at COTA in that series, bringing some familiarity with the circuit to the substitution.

Strategy for NASCAR Cup Series Standings

The decision to have Snyder finish the race was strategic. Bowman, after two earlier-season crashes at Daytona and Atlanta, is currently ranked 32nd in the Cup Series standings. By having a replacement continue after his withdrawal, there remained a chance to collect additional points if others did not finish, keeping Bowman’s hopes for improving his season alive.

What Comes Next for Bowman

With this unexpected pause in his season, Bowman and his team now look ahead, aiming to recover from both his illness and the setbacks from the season’s opening races. The next events will determine whether this midpoint swap can help him climb back up the standings in the competitive NASCAR Cup Series field.
