Alex Bowman Phoenix Replacement Relishes Shot at No. 48 Ride

Anthony Alfredo will step in as the Alex Bowman Phoenix replacement for Hendrick Motorsports at this weekend’s NASCAR Cup Series race, following Bowman’s unexpected medical setback. This turn of events gives Alfredo, a longtime simulator driver and full-time racer for Viking Motorsports, a meaningful opportunity to compete at a high level as Bowman recovers from vertigo.

Unexpected Opportunity Opens Door for Anthony Alfredo

Anthony Alfredo was selected to drive the No. 48 car at Phoenix Raceway after Alex Bowman withdrew last Sunday due to illness during the Circuit of the Americas event, where part-time driver and FOX Sports assistant Myatt Snider completed the race for him. Bowman was soon diagnosed with vertigo, leading Hendrick Motorsports to tap Alfredo for this critical fill-in role at the fourth event of the 2026 Cup Series season. Alfredo, who is 26 years old and has worked closely with the team for four years as a simulator driver, described the chance to prove himself on such a stage as something he deeply values.

“I’ve always hoped that one day could lead to something, maybe not like this, but just help my career get further along. So now I have that opportunity, and I don’t want to take it for granted. So I’ll try to soak it in, even though it’s obviously been a little bit chaotic the past couple days,”

Alfredo said (01:18 onwards).

He went on to share what the moment means, stating,

“But I feel like it’s something everybody dreams of driving for a team like Hendrick Motorsports and working with all the men and women that make it possible. So it’s going to be an awesome experience for me, and I look forward to the challenge that awaits.”

Hendrick Motorsports Focuses on Bowman’s Recovery

Alex Bowman’s status will remain under review as he works toward a return, with Hendrick Motorsports making it clear their intent is for Bowman to retake the No. 48 as soon as he receives medical clearance. Jeff Andrews, the team’s president, praised Bowman’s determination, highlighting that he has already participated in on-track evaluations in a street car. To safeguard Bowman’s championship ambitions, Hendrick Motorsports plans to request a medical waiver—ensuring he remains eligible for the NASCAR Cup Series Chase despite missing an event.

Strong Experience and Team Chemistry Help Alfredo Step In

Alfredo is far from new to collaborating with Hendrick Motorsports teams and staff. The Connecticut native has assisted the organization over three years, primarily by driving simulators for all four Hendrick teams, including working closely with crew chiefs and engineers such as Blake Harris—the current No. 48 crew chief. Alfredo notes that this background has cemented his familiarity and chemistry with the team, making for a smooth transition into the weekend’s real-world competition.

“I already have an established relationship with all four teams, the crew chiefs, the engineers and working with Blake Harris [No. 48 crew chief] and that whole team. They already know how I communicate. We have existing chemistry,”

Alfredo said during the same media session (00:20).

He added,

“So I drive the simulator every single day during the week and run through every possible setup imaginable and every possible adjustment you can make to each of those for all them to be successful.”

Alfredo’s Past Experience at Phoenix Offers Valuable Perspective

Anthony Alfredo brings prior racing experience to Phoenix Raceway, having completed a full Cup season with Front Row Motorsports in 2021 as well as multiple starts at the one-mile track, both in the top Cup Series and the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series. This history adds depth to his readiness for the current challenge and will help him adapt quickly during qualifying and race conditions.

What Lies Ahead for Team and Driver

As Alfredo prepares for his latest opportunity at Phoenix Raceway, all eyes will be on his performance and the ongoing updates about Alex Bowman’s recovery. Alfredo’s established rapport with the Hendrick Motorsports engineers and crew, combined with recent simulator and competitive experience, sets the stage for a promising weekend for the No. 48 team. Meanwhile, Bowman’s pursuit of medical clearance and the team’s efforts in supporting his Chase eligibility reflect their commitment to both the organization’s present and future in NASCAR competition.
