Austin Cindric’s Road Course Struggles Raise NASCAR Concern

Austin Cindric’s performance on road courses has become a focal point for concern after a difficult start to the NASCAR Cup Series season. Currently ranked 31st in the standings, Cindric faces questions about why results have lagged, especially given that his teammates at Team Penske are thriving, raising the issue of his continued road course struggles.

Analysis of Cindric’s Challenging Start This Season

Through the first three races of the 2026 season, Cindric has finished 34th, 26th, and 32nd. These lackluster results put him deep into 31st position in the overall points. The comparison to his Team Penske teammates, who currently sit in fourth, fifth, and sixth, is stark. Despite operating out of the same championship-contending stable, Cindric’s finishes leave him well behind, generating significant concern internally and among fans.

Yet there is one statistic that stands in contrast to his overall results. Cindric is tied for the sixth-most stage points scored in the early part of this season. This indicates that at certain points during races, he remains a competitive factor, but finishing positions do not reflect his intermittent strength. The discrepancy points to potential issues occurring deeper into race runs rather than early struggles.

Expert Raises Alarm Over Road Course Performance Drop

NASCAR analyst Eric Estepp has been vocal about the magnitude of Cindric’s struggles, blending past context with present form.

“Just a terrible start for Synri. Super Speedways have been his best track type historically. And going back to his development days, his time in the O’Reilly series, he was once viewed as a great young road course racer as well,”

said Estepp.

“So to start the year so poorly, super frustrating,”

Estepp continued.

Estepp’s concern centers around the marked decline in Cindric’s road course results since his full-time arrival in the Cup Series. In his NASCAR Xfinity Series days, Cindric had a reputation as one of the best on road circuits, racking up wins at prominent tracks like the Daytona Road Course, Mid-Ohio, Watkins Glen, Road America, and the Indianapolis Road Course. Over that developmental span, he collected at least half a dozen road course victories and was considered a rising road course specialist—a status he has not replicated in the premier series.

The Shift from Promise to Disappointing Reality

Upon entering the Cup Series full-time, Cindric struggled to transfer his road course dominance. Since 2023, he has managed only one top-five result on road courses, while averaging a 19th-place finish. Over 17 to 19 road course starts, he led merely three laps—a dramatic drop from his development series success. That stark difference highlights a significant loss of competitive edge, especially on tracks that previously showcased his talent.

One possible explanation offered by Estepp is the advent of the Next Gen car in the Cup Series, which has acted as a disruptive force for some drivers—resetting previous assumptions about who would thrive on technical circuits. Even Estepp admits uncertainty as to whether car changes fully explain the drop, but the current landscape in the Cup Series has challenged even established road course racers like Cindric.

Pressure Mounts Within Team Penske

Cindric’s situation is magnified by his surroundings. Team Penske expects their drivers to compete for wins and championships, but currently, Cindric trails far behind his fellow Penske teammates. The mounting gap between his performance and the team standard intensifies scrutiny on his future prospects and ability to rebound.

While super speedway tracks have tended to be his strength at the Cup level, the lack of strong finishes elsewhere, particularly on road courses, means that every upcoming race will bring additional pressure for Cindric to turn things around. For a Team Penske driver, falling short of playoff contention is not considered acceptable.

Future Uncertainty and the Road Ahead

As the Cup Series season continues, all eyes will be on whether Austin Cindric can recapture the form that once made him one of the feared road course competitors at the developmental level. If he fails to resolve the issues behind his road course struggles, his role within Team Penske, and possibly his future as a Cup-level road course threat, could come under even greater threat. How he responds in the coming weeks will remain a key storyline for NASCAR, highlighting just how swiftly fortunes can shift in one of motorsport’s most demanding disciplines.
