Early Life and Background
Jesse Ekene Iwuji was born on August 12, 1987, in Carrollton, Texas. His parents, Sebastian and Enderline, emigrated from Nigeria to the United States in the 1980s, and the family raised Jesse and his siblings with ties to their Igbo heritage. Iwuji is of Igbo descent, an ethnic group native to Nigeria, and while he and his siblings were born in the United States, they also hold Nigerian citizenship. Younger brothers Justin and Bryan both played college football at Texas State, following in the athletic footsteps of their older brother.
Iwuji attended Hebron High School in Texas, where he was a two-sport standout. He earned two varsity letters in football and three in track, and he was a two-star football recruit. During his junior year, the United States Naval Academy contacted him with a scholarship offer, a moment that helped set the course for his future. He later attended the Naval Academy Preparatory School before formally enrolling at the Naval Academy on June 30, 2005.
At Hebron, Iwuji was named first-team all-district as a senior. He also competed on the track and field team, which helped lay the foundation for the disciplined athletic background he would carry into military service.
Path to NASCAR
Iwuji’s interest in motorsports began during his time at the Naval Academy. While visiting Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Charlotte, North Carolina, before the 2006 Meineke Car Care Bowl, the Midshipmen players took pace-car rides around the track, and the experience sparked his curiosity about racing. During his senior year, he began drag racing at Capitol Speedway in Crofton, Maryland, behind the wheel of a Chrysler 300.
After graduating from the Naval Academy in 2010 with a Bachelor of Science degree, Iwuji served as a surface warfare officer on active duty. He worked in mine countermeasures with Mine Countermeasures Crew Exultant, deploying to Bahrain in 2012, and later deployed aboard the USS Comstock. He eventually transitioned to the Navy Reserve in 2017. Throughout this period, he continued to pursue racing on his own time, upgrading a Dodge Challenger to 1,100 horsepower and reaching 200.9 mph at the Mojave Mile speed trial.
In 2014, Iwuji tested a stock car for Performance P-1 Motorsports at Irwindale Speedway, and a year later he began competing with the team after returning from deployment. He debuted in the Whelen All-American Series and made his first NASCAR K&N Pro Series West starts at Evergreen Speedway, beginning the stock car journey that would eventually lead him to NASCAR’s national series.
